A positive temperature coefficient composition comprising a dispersion of conductive particles in a solvated or solvatable crystalline organic polymer is disclosed. Temperature self-regulating devices incorporating the composition and related method of manufacture are described.

Self-regulating laminar heating device and method of forming same

A positive temperature coefficient composition including a monomeric crystalline organic material is disclosed having a preselected switching temperature below about 150.degree. Fahrenheit. Devices incorporating same and related method of manufacture are set forth. The material includes a continuous, single phase solution of a polymer, for providing cohesion and flexibility to the positive temperature coefficient material.

A positive temperature coefficient coating or layer is produced by applying to a substrate a composition containing a dispersion of conductive particles in a solution of a solvate or solvatable crystalline organic polymer. The coating or layer so formed can be incorporated into temperature self-regulating heating devices.

A conductive hydrogel for biomedical applications is produced by a method in which an N-vinyl lactam monomer and an acrylic monomer are mixed together in a ratio of between 10:1 and 1:10 to form an adhesive precursor composition which can be polymerized rapidly and efficiently in situ in less than 30 seconds upon exposure to UV light. The electrically conductive hydrogel compositions contain the polymerizable monomers, water, a crosslinking agent, an ionizable salt and photoinitiator.

Rapid curing, electrically conductive adhesive

Adhesive precursor compositions comprising an N-vinyl lactam monomer and an acrylic monomer mixed together in a ratio of between 10:1 to 1:10 can be polymerized rapidly and efficiently in situ in less than 30 seconds, and preferably less than 10 seconds, upon exposure to UV light. The electrically conductive hydrogel compositions consist essentially of the polymerizable monomers, water, a cross-linking agent, an ionizable salt, and a photoinitiator.

Rapid, curing, electrically conductive adhesive

Disclosed is an improved temperature self-regulating resistive heating element and a method for its fabrication. The element utilizes a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) composition comprising a blend of two partially incompatible crystalline polymers of differing melting points and an electrically conductive filler. The PTC composition does not deform during annealing, this permitting the fabrication of temperature self-regulating resistive heating element with electrodes spaced-apart by not more than 0.100 inch. Heating elements provided by the invention have a smaller cross section, are more flexible, and are less expensive to fabricate than similar prior art elements.

Temperature self-regulating resistive heating element

Crystalline polymers having a relatively high melt index and low structured carbon black together produce positive temperature coefficient material which can attain suitable volume resistivity with a greatly reduced annealing time. Temperature self-regulating resistive heating elements may be made with the material in a continuous process where annealing is conducted in a heated zone while the extruded element is in motion or during a short interval when its motion is interrupted.

Method of manufacturing a positive temperature coefficient resistive

Heat-resistant pressure-sensitive adhesives are used to form the closure of a heat-shrinkable wrap-around sleeve. Suitable pressure-sensitive adhesives include silicone-based adhesives, thermosetting acrylic adhesives, and thermosetting rubber/resin adhesives. However, silicone-based adhesives are not claimed herein, but are claimed in my co-pending application, Ser. No. 944,887, filed Sept. 22, 1978, now U.S. Patent No. 4,268,559, issued on May 19, 1981.

Heat-shrinkable article

Heat-resistant pressure-sensitive adhesives are used to form the closure of a heat-shrinkable wrap-around sleeve. Suitable pressure-sensitive adhesives include silicone-based adhesives and thermosetting adhesives.
