A process for treating domestic wastewater may include directing wastewater into a tank containing a membrane filter and mixed liquor. The process may include recirculating wastewater and mixed liquor from a top end of the tank into a bottom end of the tank via a recirculation conduit. The process may include introducing a flow of wastewater and mixed liquor from the recirculation conduit into an aeration device and drawing ambient air into the aeration device using the flow of wastewater and mixed liquor from the recirculation conduit. The process may also include drawing wastewater and mixed liquor proximately surrounding the aeration device into the aeration device using the flow of wastewater and mixed liquor from the recirculation conduit. The process may include aerating a mixture of wastewater and mixed liquor with the ambient air below the membrane filter.

Method and apparatus for effecting high recovery desalination with pressure driven membranes

A process for production of minerals using an evaporation unit comprising an evaporation element for exposing thereof to the atmosphere for evaporation of a liquid solution therefrom. The evaporation element comprises an evaporation surface and a texture for deflecting the solution during movement along the surface, leaving minerals on the surface as a result of evaporation of the solution. The texture allows the minerals to detach from the element under the sole influence of normal forces of nature before the minerals reach a weight capable of damaging the evaporation unit. The process includes wetting the element with the solution, which at least partially evaporates and forms precipitated minerals, at least some of which are left on the surface; and letting the minerals detach from the surface solely under the influence of normal forces of nature before the minerals on the surface reach a weight capable of damaging the unit.

The invention provides a process for purifying water containing soluble species capable of forming one or more sparingly soluble salts or minerals, said process comprising feeding a pressurized water stream into a treatment zone having one or more membranes disposed therein, passing said stream along said membrane(s) to recover a permeate and to withdraw a concentrate therefrom while periodically reversing the direction of the flow of said stream in said treatment zone, wherein the periodicity of the flow reversal is such that said one or more membranes are exposed to supersaturation conditions evolving in said water stream for a period of time which is less then the time required for said supersaturated water stream to precipitate one or more of said sparingly soluble salts and/or minerals therefrom.

Method and system for increasing recovery and preventing precipitation fouling in pressure-driven membrane processes

A method of early detection of scaling on internal surfaces of conduits of water processing equipment, is provided herein. The method includes: transmitting ultrasonic signals through the wall of the conduits; deriving data samples from received ultrasonic signals or reflections thereof; calculating a moving average of the scatter of the ultrasonic signals, over time, based on the data samples; applying a statistical operand to the moving average, to yield a statistical distribution metric; determining a dynamic window defined by: (i) an upper boundary being the moving average plus at least a fraction of the statistical distribution metric and (ii) a lower boundary being the moving average minus the at least a fraction of the statistical distribution metric; generating a trend line being a smooth fitting of the derived samples; and monitoring the trend line within the window to detect a crossover of the trend line at either of the boundaries.

Analyzing ultrasonic signals using a dynamic window for an early detection of scaling in water processing equipment

A method for operating a tapered flow pressure driven arrangement containing a plurality of membrane modules, which comprises positioning said membrane modules in at least two successively arranged flow stages, such that the number of membrane modules operating in parallel in a given flow stage is greater than their number in the consecutive flow stage, passing a feed stream through a flow stage to generate a permeate and a concentrate, directing said concentrate to the consecutive flow stage and passing said concentrate therethrough, while periodically replacing one or more of the membrane modules belonging to said consecutive flow stage with one or more membrane modules belonging to the previous flow stage, wherein the periodicity of said replacement is such that the surface of membranes disposed in said consecutive flow stage is exposed to super-saturation conditions associated with the passage of said concentrate for a period of time that is shorter than the time required for said concentrate to precipitate therefrom one or more sparingly soluble salts and/or minerals, onto the surface of the membranes in said consecutive flow stage under said super-saturation conditions, or before deposit of organic substances can occur in the first of said two or more successively arranged flow stages. An apparatus for carrying out the aforementioned method is also provided.

Method and apparatus for repositioning flow elements in a tapered flow structure

An evaporation device for increasing evaporation from a surface of a body of liquid, comprises at least one evaporation element having at least one evaporation surface wettable by the liquid and at least partially exposable to wind when wetted, so as to allow evaporation of the liquid from the evaporation surfaces whereby the total evaporation area of the surface of the body of liquid is increased.
