A method, computer program product and system for minimizing system resources used to decompress read-only compressed analytic data in a relational database table. An i-code list associated with a relational database table is converted into a programming language. The programming language is compiled in object code and stored in a module in the user's system. The object code is called with a pointer designating the particular row in the database containing the compressed data to be decompressed. The compressed data designated by the pointer is decompressed upon execution of the object code. By having the source code for decompressing the compressed data stored as object code in the user's system, the interpretation step (as used in the i-code method) is avoiding thereby reducing the number of machine cycles used to decompress the compressed data. As a result, query programs will be able to access large amounts of data more quickly.

Maximizing system resources used to decompress read-only compressed analytic data in a relational database table

A method, computer program product and system for archiving data from an operational database. Data to be archived from the operational database may be stored either as received or transformed in a manner that allows the transformed archived data to be retrieved bit-for-bit identical to the original input received. Further, the data stored in the archive storage is read-only meaning that the data cannot be updated, deleted or modified. Further, backup copies of each of the storage units, which store the archived data, in the archive storage are created for disaster recovery purposes. Additionally, hash values are computed for each of the storage units in the archive storage which are used to detect unauthorized changes to the data stored in the storage units. In this manner, the authenticity of the data stored in the archive storage may be substantially guaranteed.

A method, computer program product and system for balancing compression efficiency against access performance. Source data is read from a database row by row and column by column within each row. Algorithm(s) are selected to compress the data read for each column. Algorithms are selected in a manner that closely maximizes the amount of data stored in a given amount of disk space but requires minimal system resources to decompress the compressed data. These algorithms are stored in a control block. Further, parameters that allow the read data to be stored in a compressed manner efficiently are stored in the control block. Upon a second reading of the source data, data is compressed column by column using the appropriate algorithms and parameters. The compressed data may then be decompressed using the appropriate algorithms and parameters. In this manner, a better balance may be realized between compression efficiency and access performance.

A change definition language (CDL) serves as an extension of (and in the general format of) the structured query language known as SQL. The change definition language allows all important alterations to be described, as changes to an existing definition, for example, and may be used by all phases of the development cycle. The CDL statements do not make the changes directly in the catalog, but instead work through SQL and another intermediate mechanism such as DB2 ALTER tailored to make changes using SQL. The changes expressed in CDL may be migrated to downstream phases and fed back to earlier phases by use of a batch of change statements expressed in CDL.

Extended SQL change definition language for a computer database system

The present invention provides a new, high-performance system and method for updating databases or other data compilations with changes entered in a source database or data compilation. Updates are preprocessed to reduce system update demands while increasing update flexibility for remote processing sites. Data update records are captured or collected and extracted into one or more channel or other criterion-specific batches. Transaction boundaries within a batch are collapsed, and the records coalesced into a package comprising a sequence of updates that reflect the cumulated impact of the extracted records. In a preferred embodiment, the batched records are sorted by extracted sort key entries and the package is converted to the physical format of respective targets. The created update package is, therefore, organized and physically formatted in correspondence with the target database. The update package is then directly applied to the target database without resort to the traditional front door processing through the local database manager. The processing typically required in database update replication is, thereby, avoided and the update process significantly streamlined. The update packages may be moved to targets by a variety of methods. The packages can be conveyed across network or Internet connections or between disconnected computers. The packages may be stored in computer readable media such as disks or CD ROMs, for example, from which the packages may be accessed by target systems. The update packages may also be made available through modems to field users or clients to allow fiexible update scheduling. The invention results in a high performance, database update system and method that significantly reduces system update burdens while increasing update flexibility and minimizing impacts from failures during updating. Updates are performed in significantly less time with a system and method that requires little administrative oversight and minimal personnel training.

System and method for database update replication

A system allows a workstation to utilize the resources of another workstation without requiring the presence of an operator on the second workstation. These resources can include memory and processor cycles, and I/O devices including disk, diskette, printer, and communications ports. When an operator is present at the second workstations, resources in excess of those required at the second workstation can also be used by a first workstation. Messages are displayed on the display of the second workstation warning that resources there are being utilized to prevent inadvertent powering off of the second workstation. In addition, jobs may be automatically started at the second workstation when the workstation is powered on, without requiring any additional action or logging on by the operator.
