An optical sensing device includes a planar substrate and an array of optical transceivers disposed on the planar substrate. Each optical transceiver includes a photodetector, at least one turning mirror having a reflective surface disposed diagonally relative to the substrate, and multiple waveguides disposed parallel to the substrate. The waveguides include a transmit waveguide, which is coupled to convey outgoing light from a coherent light source to the at least one turning mirror for output from the optical transceiver, and a receive waveguide, which is coupled to receive incoming light reflected by the at least one turning mirror and to convey the incoming light to the photodetector.

A range sensing apparatus includes a modulator that applies a frequency chirp to a light source, causing a nonlinear variation in a frequency of an outgoing beam towards a target. A detector receives both a portion of the outgoing beam and a reflection of the outgoing beam from the target. A processor, which linearizes the frequency chirp, extracts characteristic signals with and without linearization of the chirps to identify a range and velocity of the target.

Enhanced LiDAR measurements using chirp nonlinearities

A test system may be used to measure biological samples and other samples. Samples may be placed on a test substrate such as a test slide or other transparent substrate. The substrate may have patches of reactant-coated gold nanorods or other nanostructures that exhibit plasmonic resonances. An accessory may be removably coupled to a portable electronic device such as a cellular telephone. The accessory may have a lens and a light source that emits light into an edge of the test slide. The light may scatter from the nanostructures in a perpendicular direction towards a camera in the portable electronic device so that the portable electronic device can gather images of the illuminated substrate and measure spectral shifts associated with reactions between the samples and the reactant, thereby helping to analyze the composition of the samples.

Systems and accessories for optical analysis of samples on portable electronic devices

Aspects of the present disclosure involve a transparent structure. The structure may include at least one light source, a transparent light-carrying guide layer optically coupled with the at least one light source. The structure may include refractive layers where a light absorbing feature is operably associated with the light-carrying guide layer to absorb any light not internally reflected in the light guide layer, at least adjacent the light source.

Various embodiments relate to sensing defects associated with a window. Furthermore, various embodiments relate to performing image processing to produce a corrected image of a scene based at least partly on data corresponding to the detected defects. In some examples, one or more lighting modules may be used to illuminate the window to facilitate detection of the defects by one or more sensor devices.

A method includes determining temperature values for roadway areas ahead of a vehicle, determining lubricant state values for the roadway areas, and determining lubricant thickness values for the roadway areas. The method also includes determining a tire-road friction estimate for each of the roadway areas using the temperature values, the lubricant state values, and the lubricant thickness values, and defining a friction map that relates the tire-road friction estimates to the roadway areas. The method also includes determining a motion plan based at least in part on the friction map, and controlling the vehicle based on the motion plan.

Tire-road friction estimation and mapping

A system such as a vehicle system, building, or electrical equipment may be provided with one or more optical components. The optical components may include a near-infrared camera or other components that operate at near-infrared wavelengths. A visible-light-reflecting-and-infrared-light-transmitting layer may overlap the optical component. The visible-light-reflecting-and-infrared-light-transmitting layer may have an infrared-transparent substrate. A polymer layer may be formed on the substrate and may contain plasmonic nanoparticles that reflect white light. Colorant may be incorporated into the polymer layer or into an additional polymer coating to impart a desired color to the reflected white light and thereby provide the visible-light-reflecting-and-infrared-light-transmitting layer with a desired appearance.

Systems with colored infrared-transparent layers

An object detection system includes an infrared light source and an imaging system that generates an image from a portion of the infrared spectrum characterized by full absorption of solar radiation. A control system detects an object using the image, determines a command based on a location of the object, and sends a command to one or more vehicle systems. Another object detection system includes an imaging system that generates a first image based on a visible spectrum and a second image based an infrared spectrum. A control system receives a disparity indication associated with object detection and sends a command to one or more vehicle systems to implement a disparity response based on the disparity indication. The disparity indication includes information that an object is not detected within the first image and that the object is detected within the second image.
