Microencapsulated and/or enteric coated compositions containing a mixture of sorbents with specific adsorption affinities for uremic toxins including ammonia, urea, creatinine, phenols, indoles, and middle molecular weight molecules and a bacterial source which metabolizes urea and ammonia are provided. Also provided are methods of using these compositions to alleviate symptoms of uremia in patients.

Composition for alleviating symptoms of uremia in patients

Microencapsulated and/or enteric coated compositions containing a mixture of probiotics, prebiotics and ammoniaphilic bacteria with high urease activity with or without sorbents with specific adsorption affinities for uremic toxins such as creatinine, uric acid, phenols, indoles, middle molecular weight molecules and inorganic phosphate and water absorbents are provided. Also provided are methods of alleviating symptoms of uremia in a patient which comprises administering orally to a patient suffering from uremia a microencapsulated and/or enteric-coated composition.

Prebiotic and probiotic compositions and methods for their use in gut-based therapies

A new class of highly reactive vinyl-polymerizable monomers having surfactant properties is provided by the esters of acrylic, methacrylic and crotonic acids and the mono- and di-esters of maleic, fumaric, itaconic and aconitic acids with (a) C.sub.8 - C.sub.20 alkylphenoxy (ethyleneoxy).sub.10-60 ethyl alcohol, (b) (ethyleneoxy).sub.15-25 sorbitan esters of C.sub.12 - C.sub.20 fatty acids and (c) methyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose hydroxyethyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol. The new surfactive monomers are used in emulsion polymerization to provide latexes and copolymers with superior properties.
