A tubular includes an outer surface and an inner surface defining a passage. A plug is arranged in the tubular blocking the passage. The plug is formed from a disintegrating on demand (DOD) material. An ignition device is coupled to the plug. An excitation mechanism is selectively operatively associated with the ignition device. The excitation mechanism selectively activates the ignition device to break apart the plug.

A downhole system including tubular casing string and a packer setting joint configured to receive a packer therein. The packer setting joint includes an interior and an exterior, and all interior and exterior surfaces from an uphole to a downhole end of the packer setting joint are machined surfaces. The uphole end of the packer setting joint is connected to the casing string, and the downhole end of the packer setting joint is connected to the casing string. The packer setting joint has a greater burst strength than a burst strength of a casing joint connected to the packer setting joint within the casing string.

An actuation system and method, the system including a tubular having a passage, and an assembly disposed with the tubular. The assembly includes a degradable restriction, the restriction only partially blocking the passage prior to being degraded. The assembly is configured to receive and prevent further movement of a restrictor through the tubular prior to the restriction being degraded. The assembly is further configured to release the restrictor when the restriction is degraded.

An annular space is made smaller with a hub on an inner member that supports a base ring from which extend bristles that are preferably wire whose proximity is close enough to retain debris from passing through while leaving sufficient fluid paths to allow fluid movement in opposed directions in response to relative axial movement of the components that define the annular space. In one application a running tool for a liner string that has a hanger/packer is contemplated. Movement of the running string after the hanger is set and the liner is released from the string keeps the barrier in the annular space while allowing movement of an initially inserted gel put there on assembly to migrate from the annular space through the debris barrier. The running tool can have a cap on the liner top that eventually is moved away as the running tool is picked up.

An actuation system and method includes a tubular defining a passage, and an assembly disposed with the tubular. The assembly includes a restriction operatively arranged to receive a restrictor for enabling actuation of the assembly. The restriction includes a degradable material with a protective layer thereon, the degradable material degrading upon exposure to a fluid in the passage and the protective layer isolating the degradable material from the fluid.

A sliding sleeve device features a first sleeve that can be shifted with a dropped object on a seat and applied pressure to open a housing port. A second sleeve is in line with the first sleeve and be shifted to straddle the housing ports that we exposed when the opening sleeve was shifted initially. Snap rings or other locking devices can be used to hold the closing sleeve in the shifted position with the housing ports closed. The closing sleeve can also be shifted with a shifting tool that is run for example on coiled tubing. The opening sleeve can also optionally be shifted with a tool in an uphole direction to open the housing ports.

An energy storage device a first member and a second member that is slidably engaged with the first member. There are at least two seals that slidably seal the first member to the second member and define a cavity therebetween that varies in volume with relative movement between the first member and the second member. The first member is biased toward the second member in a direction that resisted increases in volume of the cavity.

A downhole tool has housing components that are relatively movable. One of the components is supported downhole while a control line provides fluid pressure to move the other housing component relative to the supported component to put the tool in a first position. Loss of control line pressure allows the weight of tubulars bearing on the upper housing or rods to move it to put the tool in another position. The tubing weight overcomes the hydrostatic pressure in the control line even when there is no applied pressure in the control line to cause relative housing or rods movement to operate a tool. In that sense the tool can be fail safe to shut off flow, for example, on loss of control line pressure while reducing or elimination the need for a large return spring to offset hydrostatic pressure.

A wiper plug has a telescoping feature to allow it to be shorter while in a lubricator so as to reduce lubricator length as compared to an extended length for proper propulsion past off center openings such as side pocket mandrels in the string. The wiper has a telescoping feature that allows it to extend when dropping or being pumped from a lubricator. Once extended, it can lock in the extended position so that it doesn't collapse on the way down the string. Centralizers can optionally be used between an upper and a lower wiping section.
