A high activity catalyst and the method of using it to effectively convert the hydrocarbon, soluble oil fraction and carbon monoxide in a diesel exhaust stream while minimizing the oxidation of SO.sub.2 is disclosed. The catalyst comprises at least one platinum group metal dispersed on a two-component support comprising in major amount one or more zeolites and in minor amount an inorganic oxide selected from the group consisting of alumina, titania and mixtures thereof.

This invention relates to a high durability catalyst for treating automotive exhaust gas which produces a minimal amount of hydrogen sulfide and is essentially free of cerium oxide and which comprises a support consisting substantially of delta alumina, an effective amount of a promoter consisting essentially of barium oxide and, optionally, lanthanum oxide, and, effective amounts of the noble metals palladium and rhodium deposited on the support. In an additional embodiment of the invention,m the support may contain delta alumina, and, optionally zirconia, and the catalyst may contain an overlayer containing delta or gamma alumina, and optionally, zirconia. Effective amounts of the noble metals palladium and rhodium may be deposited on the support and/or on the overlayer. In another aspect, the invention resides in a process for treating the exhaust gases from automotive engines to remove carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, and to minimize the production of hydrogen sulfide.

A three-way catalyst for use in treating automotive exhaust gases employs a delta alumina support which contains oxides of cerium plus barium and/or lanthanum, plus at least one Group VIII noble metal from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium and iridium.

This invention relates to a catalytic composite for treating an exhaust gas comprising a first support which is a refractory inorganic oxide having dispersed thereon at least one noble metal component and having dispersed immediately thereon an overlayer comprising at least one oxygen storage component and optionally a second support which is a refractory inorganic oxide. The first support may be selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica, titania, zirconia and aluminosilicates with alumina being preferred. Additionally, the noble metal component may be selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthernium and iridium. The oxygen storage component is an oxide of a metal which includes cerium, iron, nickel, cobalt lanthanum, neodymium, praesodymium, etc. and mixtures thereof. Cerium oxide is a preferred oxygen storage component. Finally, the second support may be selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica, titania, zirconia and aluminosilicates, with alumina preferred. This invention also relates to a process for minimizing the content of hydrogen sulfide in an automotive exhaust gas which comprises contacting said exhaust gas with a catalytic composite comprising a first support which is a refractory inorganic oxide having dispersed thereon at least one noble metal component and having dispersed immediately thereon an overlayer comprising at least one oxygen storage component and optionally a second support which is a refractory inorganic oxide.

Layered automotive catalytic composite

This invention relates to an improved catalytic composite for treating an exhaust gas comprising a first support which is a refractory inorganic oxide, having dispersed thereon at least one oxygen storage component and at least one noble metal component and having dispersed immediately thereon an overlayer comprising lanthanum oxide and optionally a second support which is a refractory inorganic oxide. The first and second support may be selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica, titania, zirconia and aluminosilicates with alumina being preferred. Additionally, the noble metal component may be selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium and iridium. The oxygen storage component is an oxide of a metal which includes cerium, iron, nickel, cobalt lanthanum, neodymium, praesodymium, etc. and mixtures thereof. This invention also relates to a process for treating automotive exhaust comprising contacting the exhaust with the catalytic composite described above. The catalytic composite shows improved activity, especially for eliminating NO.sub.x, after extensive durability testing and also minimizes the formation of H.sub.2 S.

Lanthanum containing catalyst for treating automotive exhaust

Cerium oxide is a preferred oxygen storage component. Finally, the second support may be selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica, titania, zirconia and aluminosilicates, with alumina preferred. This invention also relates to a process for minimizing the content of hydrogen sulfide in an automotive exhaust gas which comprises contacting said exhaust gas with a catalyst composite comprising a first support which is a refractory inorganic oxide having dispersed thereon at least one noble metal component and having dispersed immediately thereon an overlayer comprising at least one oxygen storage component and optionally a second support which is refractory inorganic oxide.
