A system for wirelessly obtaining a measurement of a characteristic of a molten metal is disclosed. The system includes a contact block configured to be operatively coupled to a first end of a substantially hollow lance holder. The contact block is detachably and electrically coupled to and receives analog signals from a measurement sensor. The contact block converts the received analog signals into ultrasonic signals and transmits the ultrasonic signals through the hollow of the lance holder. A receiver block is configured to be operatively coupled to a second end of the lance holder. The second end is opposite the first end of the lance holder. The receiver block receives the ultrasonic signals from the contact block and converts the received ultrasonic signals into a digital voltage signal.

A method of making self-supporting ceramic composite structures having filler embedded therein includes infiltrating a permeable mass of filler with polycrystalline material comprising an oxidation reaction product obtained by oxidation of a parent metal such as aluminum. The self-supporting ceramic composite structure optionally contains therein non-oxidized constituents of the parent metal. The structure is formed by placing a parent metal adjacent to a permeable filler and heating the assembly to melt the parent metal and provide a molten body of parent metal which is contacted with a suitable oxidant. Within a certain temperature region and optionally, aided by one or more dopants in or on the parent metal, molten parent metal will migrate through previously formed oxidation reaction product into contact with the oxidant, causing the oxidation reaction product to grow so as to embed the adjacent filler and provide the composite structure. The parent metal may be provided as a body of metal placed in contact with an exterior surface of the permeable mass. Alternatively, the parent metal may be placed adjacent to the filler material by admixing a plurality of discrete bodies of parent metal (e.g., particulate metal) into the permeable mass. In this embodiment, the growth of oxidation reaction product still embeds the adjacent filler material without substantial change in the size or shape of the permeable mass, but does not result in the creation of voids at the former locations of the bodies of parent metal.

Aluminum nitride refractory materials and methods for using the same

The present invention broadly relates to novel aluminum nitride matrix ceramic composite bodies for use as refractory materials and methods for making the same. The refractory materials are useful in environments which are corrosive, erosive, abrasive and/or which generate thermal shock. Such environments include furnaces, and associated apparatus which house or contact molten masses including, for example, molten metals, molten glasses, etc. The preferred method for making the aluminum nitride matrix ceramic composites comprises a directed oxidation of molten metal.

Aluminum nitride refractory materials and methods for making the same

There is provided a method for producing a self-supporting ceramic composite comprising (1) a ceramic matrix obtained by oxidation of an aluminum zinc alloy to form a polycrystalline oxidation reaction product of the metal with an oxidant, and (2) one or more fillers embedded by the matrix. The metal alloy and permeable mass of filler having at least one defined surface boundary are oriented relative to each other so that formation of the oxidation reaction product will occur into said mass of filler and in a direction towards said defined surface boundary. On heating the metal to a first temperature above its melting point but below the melting point of said oxidation reaction product to form a body of molten parent metal, the molten metal reacts with said oxidant to form said oxidation reaction product which infiltrates said mass of filler to said defined surface boundary. The resulting infiltrated mass is heated to a second temperature in order to remove or oxidize at least a substantial portion of one or more residual non-oxidized metallic constituents from or in said infiltrated mass without substantial formation of said oxidation reaction product beyond said defined surface boundary, thereby producing a self-supporting ceramic composite.

A refractory component for use in contact with molten metal comprising a ceramic matrix which is three-dimensionally interconnected, said matrix comprising an oxidation reaction product of aluminum parent metal, said ceramic matrix containing less than about 0.5% by weight residual parent metal, said ceramic matrix embedding at least one filler material, thereby forming a ceramic composite body, said ceramic composite body having a porosity which is interconnected, said interconnected porosity comprising openings having a mean diameter of less than about 6 microns.

The present invention relates to a method of forming ceramic matrix composite bodies comprising a parent metal reacting with an oxidant to produce an oxidation reaction product which infiltrates a loose unbounded mass or a preform comprising a filler material mixture. Specifically, the filler material mixture used in the method of the present invention comprises a material having varying compositions, sizes and/or shapes of filler material within the mass or preform. By utilizing a filler possessing varying compositions, sizes and/or shapes, enhanced packing of the filler material is achieved which may result in improved properties, such as erosion resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. Further, the use of filler material containing varying sizes and/or shapes may also enhance the growth rate of oxidation reaction product, thereby reducing processing times for formation of the resultant ceramic composite body.

Method of making ceramic composite bodies incorporating filler material

The present invention relates to a method of forming ceramic matrix composite bodies comprising a parent metal reacting with an oxidant to produce an oxidation reaction product which infiltrates a loose unbonded mass or a preform comprising a filler material mixture. Specifically, the filler material mixture used in the method of the present invention comprises a material having varying compositions, sizes and/or shapes of filler material within the mass or preform. By utilizing a filler possessing varying compositions, sizes and/or shapes, enhanced packing of the filler material is achieved which may result in improved properties, such as erosion resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. Further, the use of filler material containing varying sizes and/or shapes may also enhance the growth rate of oxidation reaction product, thereby reducing processing times for formation of the resultant ceramic composite body.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a protective layer on a ceramic or a ceramic composite body. Stated more particularly, by subjecting a ceramic or a ceramic composite body being interconnected residual metal therein to a particular atmosphere, a protective layer can be formed from the interconnected metal. Such a layer can be protective, especially in corrosion environments which include various gaseous or solid species containing sodium and silicon, such as those found in glass tanks.
