Electrically conductive and abrasion resistant polymeric compositions, methods of fabrication thereof and uses thereof are described. Admixtures of abrasion resistant materials and electrically conductive polymeric materials are formed. Many of these admixtures arc light transmitting and can be used as an abrasion resistant light transmitting electrostatic discharge layers. The light transmitting discharge layer is useful as a surface coating for visual displays such as CRT screens to avoid electrostatic accumulation of dust and scratching. The compositions can be admixtures of abrasion resistant silicones, polysiloxanes, acrylates, epoxies, methacrylates, epoxyacrylates, epoxymethacrylates, styrenes and electrically conductive polymers selected from the group of substituted and unsubstituted polyanilines, polyparaphenylenevinyles, substituted and unsubstituted polythiophenes substituted and unsubstituted poly-p-phenylene sulfides, substituted and unsubstituted polyfuranes, substituted and unsubstituted polypyrroles, substituted and unsubstituted polyselenophenes, polyacetylines formed from soluble precursors, combinations thereof and blends thereof with other polymers. The compositions can be a layer or an electrically conductive polymer with an abrasion resistant layer thereover.

Electrically conductive and abrasion/scratch resistant polymeric materials, method of fabrication thereof and uses thereof

Electrically conductive and abrasion resistant polymeric compositions, methods of fabrication thereof and uses thereof are described. Admixtures of abrasion resistant materials and electrically conductive polymeric materials are formed. The invention is an improvement in a liquid crystal display device of the type having spaced front and rear glass panels, a transparent electrode layer, and an array of individually addressable pel electrodes separated from the transparent electrode layer by a cavity filled with liquid crystal material. The improvement comprises a color filter layer in the form of a decal pattern. The decal pattern is formed using interference film techniques which form an inorganic color filter. The decal is placed on one of the glass panels using known decal transfer methods. The inorganic nature of the color filter layer and the decal transfer methods allow for enhanced optical density of the color liquid crystal display.

Decal technology is employed to provide a color filter layer for a thin film transistor liquid crystal display device. The red/green/blue color regions and an opaque surround are printed on a suitable substrate using gravure printing techniques and colored glass frit materials. Once the printed decal is transferred to one of the glass panels, it can be heated to fuse it to the glass. Electrodes can be deposited directly on this fused color filter layer.

A thin film transistor liquid crystal device with color capabilities can be fabricated using polychromatic glass. Polychromatic glass is a full-color photosensitive glass in which colored regions can be established through exposure to ultraviolet radiation either concurrently with or followed by heat treatment. To assure that colored regions in the polychromatic glass are aligned with individual pel electrodes, each driven by a thin film transistor, the pel electrodes are used as a shutter to control the exposure of the polychromatic glass to the ultraviolet radiation.

Method of making a TFT LC display having polychromatic glass color

The color filters required for a thin film transistor liquid crystal display device are provided by using polychromatic glass for either the front or rear glass panel of the device. Through a series of masking, ultraviolet exposure and heat treating steps, red, green, and blue color areas can be generated in the polychromatic glass. Each of the different colored areas is, of course, to be aligned with one of the individually-addressable pel electrodes in the device. Two embodiments are described. In the first, the polychromatic glass forms the rear glass panel of the device and serves as a substrate for the thin film transistors used to individually address pel electrodes. In an alternate embodiment, the front glass panel of device is treated to form the color filter regions.
