A compound of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, Z represents a ring selected from: ##STR2## in which n represents 4, 5 or 6; ##STR3## in which R.sup.3 represents hydrogen or an alkyl group and R.sup.4 represents an alkyl, methoxy benzyl or R.sup.5 NHCO group, R.sup.5 being an alkyl group; and ##STR4## in which R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group. and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are useful in the treatment of migraine and other conditions. A method of treating anxiety including administering to a person to be treated an effective amount of compounds of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein the various substituents are defined hereinbelow have pharmacological properties rendering them useful as antiemetic agents with reduced undesirable side-effects or as anxiolytic agents. Various methods are described for their preparation involving formation of the amide link, etherification of the 2-hydroxy derivative, introducing the R.sup.5 CH.sub.2 group on the N-unsubstituted azabicyclooctane or nonane or, for 4-amino compounds, by hydrolysing a 4-acylamino derivative.

Compounds of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein the various substituents are defined hereinbelow have pharmacological properties rendering them useful as antiemetic agents with reduced undesirable side-effects. Various methods are described for their preparation involving formation of the amide link, etherification of the 2-hydroxy derivative, introducing the R.sup.5 CH.sub.2 group on the N-unsubstituted azabicyclooctane or nonane or, for 4-amino compounds by hydrolysing a 4-acylamino derivative.

Antiemetic N-substituted benzamides

A process for producing basic aluminum magnesium carbonate, Al.sub.2 Mg.sub.6 (OH).sub.14 (CO.sub.3).sub.2.4H.sub.2 O, by carbonating an aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH).sub.3) and magnesium hydroxide aqueous reaction mixture with carbon dioxide in the presence of at least 6 moles of a base selected from the group consisting of ammonia, mono, di or trialkylamines, pyridine or piperidine, per mole of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 present. The product is useful as an antacid.

Compounds of the general formula I: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a thienyl group, or a phenyl group optionally substituted by a halogen (preferably fluorine or chlorine) atom, a lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group, R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen or halogen (preferably fluorine) atom, a lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group, R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen or halogen (preferably fluorine) atom, a lower alkylthio, lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group, or a cycloalkyl group containing 5 or 6 carbon atoms, or a group of the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 singly each represents a hydrogen atom or lower alkyl group, R.sup.6 represents a cycloalkyl, hydroxymethyl, carboxy or lower alkoxycarbonyl group, and W represents a carbonyl ##STR3## or a hydroxymethylene [viz. --CH(OH)--] group, and pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof possess potent selective Histamine H.sub.1 -receptor blocking and calcium antagonist properties and are of interest in the treatment of a variety of respiratory, allergenic and cardiovascular disease states. The new compounds can be prepared by various methods based on the condensation of .alpha.-substituted benzyl halides with N-(benzoylpropyl or phenyl-hydroxypropyl)-4-hydroxy piperidines or condensation of di-substituted-methoxy-piperidines with a benzoylpropyl halide or a phenyl-hydroxypropyl-halide followed, where necessary, by removal of protecting groups.

Piperidine derivatives

A new basic aluminium magnesium carbonate of the formula Al.sub.2 Mg.sub.6 (OH).sub.14 (CO.sub.3).sub.2.4H.sub.2 O has been found to be useful in pharmaceutical formulations for the treatment of upper gastrointestinal tract disturbances associated with excess acid and pepsin secretion or biliary reflux.
