An exemplary system for aligning a relative position between two components includes a locating member and an alignment insert member configured to couple with the locating member. The alignment insert member includes a radially-extending tab. The radially-extending tab has a plurality of identifying markers to identify a radial position of the locating member. The locating member is rotatable within the alignment insert member to adjust a radial position of the locating member.

Component alignment system

An eccentric steering axis strut top mount providing a reduced spindle length. An axes eccentricity is provided by laterally shifting the steering axis with respect to the strut rod axis in a direction toward a vertical ray passing through the wheel center. The axes eccentricity results in an upper point of the kingpin axis being laterally shifted toward the vertical ray with the consequence of the spindle length being shortened.

A twist axle suspension for an automotive vehicle comprises first and second trailing arms, each having a front end and a rear end joined by an intermediate portion providing a weld site. The front ends of the trailing arms have pivots pivoted to the body of the automotive vehicle and the rear ends of the trailing arms support spring and damped rear wheels of the automotive vehicle. A perforated twist axle having first and second end sections abuts and is welded to the trailing arms at the weld sites. An arcuate apex portion joins the perforated walls to provide the twist axle with a V-shaped cross section having a shear center line disposed above the arcuate portion, the shear center being spaced a selected distance H above the axes about which the trailing arms pivot. A straight intermediate section of the twist axle is displaced from the first and second end sections to lower or raise the shear center line at the intermediate section without affecting the welds of the first and second end sections to the trailing arms.

Twist axle suspensions

An apparatus for preloading a torsion bar includes an adjuster arm that is adapted to be attached to and extend radially from a torsion bar and includes a free end with an involute surface formed thereon. An adjustment nut is adapted to be rigidly attached to a support member for the torsion bar adjacent a free end of the adjuster arm. An adjustment bolt having a free end for engaging the involute surface of the adjuster arm is threadably engaged in the adjustment nut. When the adjuster arm is attached to the torsion bar and the adjustment nut is attached to the support member, rotation of the adjustment bolt rotates the adjuster arm and the torsion bar about a longitudinal axis of the torsion bar thereby changing a preload applied to the torsion bar. The adjustment bolt remains perpendicular to the involute surface while the adjuster arm rotates.
