A starter-generator module for a gas turbine engine includes an inner stator portion with an armature defining a rotation axis and an outer rotor portion disposed about the rotation axis. The outer rotor portion includes a permanent magnet and a gear teeth member. The permanent magnet is disposed about the rotation axis and the gear teeth member is defined on the outer rotor portion such that the gear teeth member transmits rotational energy to an accessory gearbox in a start mode and receives rotational energy from the accessory gearbox in a generate mode.

Starter-generator modules for gas turbine engines

A claw pole synchronous machine includes a housing and a rotor being rotatable relative to the housing and having a plurality of first claw poles circumferentially alternating with a plurality of second claw poles. The plurality of first claw poles are axially overlapping with the plurality of second claw poles. At least two DC excitation coils are fixed relative to the housing and configured to provide a magnetic field to the rotor. A stator is fixed to the housing.

Kinetic energy storage with a switched reluctance machine

An integrated flywheel energy storage device includes an inner stator having an interior support component and multiple stator cores connected to the interior support component, each with an associated stator coil arranged in multiple electrical phases. An outer rotor housing supports multiple active rotor poles which each face inward toward the stator cores, the active rotor poles being permanent magnets, copper relining, an induction squirrel cage, or variable reluctance poles. A vacuum containment housing surrounds the outer rotor housing. The outer rotor housing has a rotational moment of inertia that stores kinetic energy as a kinetic battery, allowing the device to deliver multi-phase electrical power when required. High power density is achieved by integrating the flywheel into the outer rotor housing. The device additionally functions as a gyroscope for stabilizing an exterior structure, or as a gyroscopic reference for navigational purposes when supported on a gimballed platform.

A synchronous generator may comprise a rotor and a stator. The stator may comprise a first armature winding configured to output a first three-phase voltage and a second armature winding configured to output a second three-phase voltage. The synchronous generator may further comprise a first rectifier configured to rectify the first three-phase voltage received from the first armature winding, and a second rectifier configured to rectify the second three-phase voltage received from the second armature winding.

A stator for a generator includes a ferromagnetic core with two or more poles arranged about a rotation axis, a direct current (DC) field coil, and four or more alternating current (AC) coils. An electric motor is disclosed that includes a stator winding defining a plurality of poles, with the winding being controllable to switch between a first number of poles and a second number of poles. A rotor rotatable within the stator includes a first group of magnetic flux barriers being without permanent magnet material and a second group of magnetic flux barriers at least partially filled with a permanent magnet material. A method of operating a line-start electric motor is also disclosed.

A rotor includes a shaft. A plurality of rotor modules are disposed about the shaft. Each of the rotor modules includes a cylindrical support ring, a ferromagnetic core radially outward of the support ring, at least one PM arc arranged in a first ring and at least one PM arc arranged in a second ring, the first and second ring being radially outward of the ferromagnetic core, and a retainer having a first wall disposed radially outward of the first ring and the second ring and a second wall defining an axial boundary between the first ring and the second ring.

A line start synchronous-reluctance (LSSRM) brushless motor includes a stator that is arranged at an inner circumferential surface of a motor body and that extends longitudinally along an axis to define a central opening. A rotor assembly is disposed in the central opening. The rotor assembly includes a rotor that is configured to rotate via a shaft, and that is surrounded by the stator to define an air gap between an outer edge of the rotor and the stator. The rotor assembly further includes a plurality rotor slots arranged along the circumference of the outer edge, and at least one magnetic flux barrier aligned with a group of opposing rotor slots.

Line-start synchronous reluctance motor with improved performance

An electric power system (EPS) may comprise a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), a high speed rectifier configured to receive a first alternating current (AC) power from the PMSG, and a low speed rectifier configured to receive a second AC power from the PMSG. The low speed rectifier may be configured to receive the first AC power in response to the PMSG rotating at a first rotational speed, and the high speed rectifier may be configured to receive the second AC power in response to the PMSG rotating at a second faster rotational speed.

Voltage regulation of permanent magnet generator with extended speed range

A rotor has a ferromagnetic body with a surface and magnetic poles arranged about a rotation axis. One or more of the magnetic poles has a first magnetic flux barrier and a second magnetic flux barrier. The first magnetic flux barrier is arranged radially between the rotation axis and the surface of the ferromagnetic body. The second magnetic flux barrier is arranged radially between the first magnetic flux barrier and the surface of the ferromagnetic body.

Hybrid synchronous machines

An apparatus for electromagnetic actuation includes a cylindrical housing. The apparatus further includes at least two stationary cores fixed to the cylindrical housing. Each stationary core includes at least one first annular portion having a first annular thickness between a first inner diameter and a first outer diameter. The apparatus further includes a ring coil fixed to and in operable communication with each of the at least two stationary cores. The apparatus further includes a ferromagnetic armature concentrically aligned with the at least two stationary cores and configured to move relative to the at least two stationary cores. The ferromagnetic armature has at least one second annular portion having a second annular thickness between a second inner diameter and a second outer diameter. The second annular thickness is about the same as the first annular thickness.

Reciprocating electromagnetic actuator with flux-balanced armature and stationary cores

A switched reluctance electric machine includes a stator ring having a plurality of stator poles, at least one rotor concentric to the stator ring and including a yoke portion and a plurality of pole portions extending radially from the yoke portion. A plurality of pole flux barriers are embedded in each of the at least one rotor such that a first portion of each of the plurality of pole flux barriers extends radially into a first pole portion in the plurality of pole portions, a second portion of the pole flux barrier extends radially into a second pole portion in the plurality of pole portions, and a third portion of the pole flux barrier passes through the yoke portion and connects the first portion and the second portion of the pole flux barrier.

A power system architecture includes a prime mover, a plurality of single phase permanent magnet generators mechanically coupled to the prime mover, a DC power bus including a plurality of DC power storage components, each of the DC energy storage components being electrically connected to at least one of the single phase permanent magnet generators, a plurality of state of charge calculators, each of the state of charge calculators being connected to one of the DC energy storage component and being communicatively coupled to a generator control unit, and wherein the generator control unit is configured to independently control each of the single phase permanent magnet generators.
