The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of arylsulfonylpro-penenitriles. The reaction starting from arylsulfonyl halides is catalyzed by a cat-alyst compound comprising a transition metal. The process is scalable, environ-mentally benign and provides the product in good yield.

Process for the preparation of arylsulfonylpropenenitriles

A method for preparation of a starch-promoted alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) sizing emulsion is provided. The inventive method comprises adding a sizing promoter comprising high-charge cationic starch and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) to a stabilized AKD emulsion and further wherein addition of said sizing promoter comprising high-charge cationic starch and PAC is effected at ambient temperature, after emulsification, stabilization, and homogenization of said stabilized AKD emulsion; and prior to addition of the starch-promoted AKD sizing emulsion to papermaking furnish, pulp, or fiber stock.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a fibrillated cellulose material. In the invention fibrillated cellulose is produced enzymatically by using a low energy demanding mechanical mixer such as plough share mixer, to enhance the fibrillation. Enzymes and process conditions are chosen so that the cellulose degradation is as low as possible, while obtaining a high yield of nanofibrils. Sugars that are produced into the end-product may also be furthermore exploited.

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing nanostructured paper or board and a novel paper or board. The method comprises providing a liquid suspension of nanocellulose-containing material, forming a web from the suspension, and drying the web in order to form paper or board. According to the invention the water content of the suspension from which the web is formed is 50% or less by weight of liquids. By means of the invention, energy consumption of paper manufacturing can be significantly reduced.

The invention relates to a method of treating chemical pulp fibers by a polymerizing hydroxy acid, the fibers thus obtained and the products refined from them. In the method, the hydroxy acid reacts with the reactive groups of the fibers in the presence of a catalyst, forming ester bonds. The following units of the same hydroxy acid are oligomerized and/or polymerized to these grafted acid residues. The fibers thus treated and the products refined thereof endure better processing stages that include drawing and stretching than untreated fibers.
