The present invention provides adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), adipose-derived stem cell-enriched fractions (ADSC-EF) and adipose-derived lattices, alone and combined with the ADSCs of the invention. In one aspect, the present invention provides an ADSC substantially free of adipocytes and red blood cells and clonal populations of connective tissue stem cells. The ADSCs can be employed, alone or within biologically-compatible compositions, to generate differentiated tissues and structures, both in vivo and in vitro. Additionally, the ADSCs can be expanded and cultured to produce molecules such as hormones, and to provide conditioned culture media for supporting the growth and expansion of other cell populations. In another aspect, the present invention provides an adipose-derived lattice substantially devoid of cells, which includes extracellular matrix material from adipose tissue. The lattice can be used as a substrate to facilitate the growth and differentiation of cells, whether in vivo or in vitro, into anlagen or even mature tissues or structures.

Adipose-derived stem cells and lattices

A device and method for producing refined adipose tissue for use in autologous adipose transplantation or research wherein a sterile environment is maintained. More particularly, a system for refining tissue comprising a first flexible container, a second flexible container having a plurality of pores providing for fluid communication between the interior of the first flexible container and the interior of the first enveloping flexible container, a first port that provides communication between the exterior environment and the interior of the first flexible container and thereby provides a means for introducing fluids into the interior of the first flexible container and allowing waste effluent to exit the first container, a second flexible container, a second port for inserting tissue into the second container and expressing refined tissue out of the container, and a means for controlling the opening and closing of the first and second ports. The method comprises introducing a tissue sample into the system and subjecting it to a washing phase wherein the tissue is agitated, the waste effluent is allowed to exit the system through the first port, and the refined tissue is expressed out the second port for further refinement or transplantation.

System and method for refining liposuctioned adipose tissue

The present invention provides a device for performing suction lipectomy or liposuction in which the reciprocal motion required during the liposuction procedure is automated. This automation greatly reduces the physical exertion required of the operating surgeon. The present invention also allows the use of smaller cannulae to achieve an improved aesthetic result. Use of such smaller cannulae with the manual liposuction procedures currently in use would be extremely taxing if not impossible.
