An example method includes performing a machining operation by providing linear movement of a tool along a feed axis relative to a workpiece while superimposing oscillation of the tool onto the feed axis and providing rotation of the tool relative to the workpiece. During an optimization mode, the machining operation is performed on a first workpiece portion while providing the linear movement at an initial feed velocity, and sequentially superimposing the oscillating at a plurality of different frequencies. An optimal oscillation frequency is determined from the plurality of different frequencies which causes the tool to apply less force to the first workpiece portion at the initial feed velocity than others of the frequencies. During a run mode, the machining operation is performed on a second workpiece portion having a same composition as the first workpiece portion while superimposing the oscillation at the optimal oscillation frequency.

Method and apparatus for machining a workpiece

An efficient and effective computerized apparatus and method for determining the effects of railroad car humping on cargo in railroad cars. The invention broadly comprises a twelve-wheel test cart mounted on a pair of rails for simulating a rail car; an impact structure for simulating rail cars during humping; an electric motor drive unit for accelerating and propelling the test cart toward the impact structure, a series of hydraulic accumulator springs and valves for decelerating the test cart during the humping of the test cart with the impact structure, and a programmed computer for controlling test variables. The test apparatus allows the levels of severity to be readily changed and the test cart to be positively coupled to the impact structure or to rebound from the impact structure.

Railroad car coupling simulator and method

The portable collection device has a longitudinal axis and includes a shovel made from board material having a tubular handle portion surrounding the longitudinal axis and a scoop portion having a bottom wall and a pair of laterally outwardly extending side walls hingedly connected to opposite edges of the bottom wall to form a scoop-like structure for collecting animal litter. The scoop portion is attached on one end to the handle portion and at the other end has a leading edge for use in collecting the animal litter. A flexible collection bag houses the shovel. The bag has a tubular stem portion surrounding the longitudinal axis, a large pouch portion with a sealable entrance opening at one end of the stem portion and a hand strap portion at the other end of the stem portion. The shovel has the tubular handle portion located in the tubular stem portion of the bag and the scoop portion located in the pouch portion. The hand strap permits the user to carry the collection device before and after the device is used to pick up litter.
