There is provided by the invention a structure-activity model for identifying avian repellent compounds. It has now been found that certain topological and electronic features of a molecule, especially the presence of a core ring structure, the basicity of the molecule in general, and the electronegativity of the core ring structure, are predictive of its avian repellency. Such features may be used to identify avian repellent compounds and such compounds may be utilized in methods for repelling birds from consuming or utilizing a material. There is further provided by this invention, novel avian repellents for use in methods of repelling birds from consuming or utilizing materials otherwise susceptible to consumption or utilization. Additionally, methods for repelling birds from consuming or utilizing non-potable aquatic habitats are provided herein.

A novel rodent edible is disclosed. The edible contains a conventional edible component, and an attractant naturally present in the breath of said rodents in an amount effective to increase the preference for said edible component to said rodents. Carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide are the preferred attractants. Preference for the edible component may be achieved by mixing the attractant with the food, or merely by associating the aroma of the attractant with the edible component to stimulate a preference for that component.

Enhanced rodent edible with natural attractants

The present application discloses a novel mammalian livestock feed additive containing a selective avian taste aversive agent, preferably dimethyl anthranilate, which is at least partially entrapped in an edible solid vehicle to improve its taste persistency. In the preferred embodiment, the edible vehicle is a modified food starch which is spray dried with the avian taste aversive agent. The disclosed livestock feed additive may be incorporated in a livestock feed to reduce the amount of feed lost to avian species, and to reduce the likelihood that mammals will be infected by avian transmitted diseases such as transmissible gastroenteritis. Alternatively, a mammalian poison is disclosed comprising an avian taste aversive additive which will increase the amount of that poison available for ingestion by mammalian target species and decrease the likelihood of secondary poisoning of a number of endangered species. An improved avian poison is also disclosed comprising a mixture of a discrete avian toxicant and a discrete avian food component, comprising an avian taste aversive additive which is at least partially entrapped in a vehicle to improve its taste persistency.
