A deposit management system is operable responsive to data read from data bearing records. The system is associated with financial funds depositories. Each depository can accept items, such as deposit bags. Each depository includes a bar code reader that can read data from a bar code label that is located on a deposit bag. The system allows merchants to preregister a deposit before performing the deposit. A preregistered deposit is linked with a deposit identifier in a data store. The deposit identifier can be represented in a bar code. If the system determines that a depository read a bar code having a deposit identifier that corresponds in the data store to a preregistered deposit, then that depository is operated to automatically unlock its deposit entry door to permit the deposit. The system also allows merchants to review their deposit history.

The system includes a deposit accepting machine for accepting deposit items, such as deposit bags, currency, and checks. The deposit accepting machine includes a card reader operable to read financial account data from cards of depositors. The machine includes a RFID reader that wirelessly reads data from RFID tags on deposited items, including account number and deposit amount data. A computer credits the account for the read deposit amount. The machine, which can also dispense cash, further includes an NFC reader that can wirelessly receive cash loading data from an NFC component on a cash handler's cash transport bag. The cash loading data can include an amount of cash loaded into the machine. The machine can wirelessly transmit to the bag, dispense data that includes the amount of cash dispensed since the last cash loading.

An automated banking machine includes a card reader operative to read data from user cards. Read card data enables an authorized machine user to select between receiving currency bills that include a programmable tracking device or currency bills that do not include a programmable tracking device. The automated banking machine can dispense the form of currency bills that corresponds to the user's selection. Prior to dispensing a currency bill that has a programmable tracking device, the automated banking machine stores information related to the read card data in the currency bill.
