A process for producing stable, high purity ferrate (VI) employing beta-ferric oxide (beta-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3), and preferably monohydrated beta-ferric oxide (beta-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3.H.sub.2 O) as the iron source. An improved process for producing stable, high purity beta-ferric oxide is also disclosed. The process results in the efficient and effective productions of ferrate with high yields and small amounts of waste production. A large portion of the unused product stream can be recycled to the ferrate reactor for the production of additional ferrate.

A process of treating water to remove transuranic elements contained therein by adjusting the pH of a transuranic element-containing water source to within the range of about 6.5 to about 14.0, admixing the water source with an alkali or alkaline earth ferrate in an amount sufficient to form a precipitate within the water source, the amount of ferrate effective to reduce the transuranic element concentration in the water source, permitting the precipitate in the admixture to separate and thereby yield a supernatant liquid having a reduced transuranic element concentration, and separating the supernatant liquid having the reduced transuranic element concentration from the admixture is provided. Additionally, a water soluble salt, e.g., a zirconium salt, can be added with the alkali or alkaline earth ferrate in the process to provide greater removal efficiencies. Described is a process for making a calcium/sodium ferrate adduct with sodium ferrate in a divided-type electrolysis cell. The anolyte chamber of the cell is charged with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and a sodium ferrate-stabilizing proportion of at least one sodium halide salt. The anolyte chamber additionally contains ferric ions [Fe(III)]. The catholyte chamber contains an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution during operation. The source of ferric ion in the anolyte may be either an iron-containing anode or at least one iron-containing compound present in the anolyte solution or both. The preferred material separating the anolyte chamber from the catholyte chamber is comprised of a gas- and hydraulic-impermeable, ionically-conductive, chemically-stable ionomeric film (e.g., a cation-exchange membrane with carboxylic, sulfonic or other inorganic exchange sites). Sodium ferrate is prepared in the anolyte chamber by passing an electric current and impressing a voltage between the anode and cathode of the cell. During electrolysis, sodium ferrate forms in the aqueous sodium hydroxide anolyte. This anolyte is reacted with a calcium compound to produce a calcium/sodium ferrate adduct. Alternatively the sodium ferrate may be first recovered in a solid form and then reacted with a calcium compound to produce said adduct.

The anolyte chamber additionally contains ferric ions [Fe(III)]. The catholyte chamber contains an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The source of ferric ion in the anolyte may be either an iron-containing anode or at least one iron-containing compound present in the anolyte solution or both. The preferred membrane material for separating the anolyte chamber from the catholyte chamber is comprised of a gas- and hydraulic-impermeable, ionically-conductive, chemically-stable ionomeric film (e.g., a cation-exchange membrane) with carboxylic, sulfonic or other inorganic exchange sites. Described is an electrolytic process for producing sodium ferrate [Fe(VI)] in a membrane-type electrolysis cell. Electrolysis causes the formation of sodium ferrate in the aqueous sodium hydroxide anolyte. This anolyte may be used directly (e.g., to treat waste-water streams) or reacted to produce potassium ferrate or alkaline earth metal ferrates. Sodium ferrate may alternatively be recovered as a solid from the anolyte by cooling and filtration or other mechanical removal techniques.

Process for the electrochemical production of sodium ferrate [Fe(VI)]

Disclosed is a process for making potassium ferrate (K.sub.2 FeO.sub.4) by reacting substantially pure KOH, C1.sub.2, and a ferric salt in the presence of a stabilizing proportion of at least one ferrate-stabilizing compound (e.g., a combination of an alkali metal silicate and an alkali metal iodine-containing salt). The formed K.sub.2 FeO.sub.4 is separated and recovered from other reaction co-products [KCl, H.sub.2 O, KOCl, and Fe(OH).sub.3 ] and excess KOH. Other specific improvements include the following:
