An electrode for enhancing electrical conductivity between an oil or gas field downhole and the surrounding formation. The electrode may serve as a cathode to cooperate with a remote anode to produce an electric field through the formation. The electrode has an electrically conductive, elongated body with a proximal end adapted to be inserted into the production pipe and a distal end adapted to project into the formation. The body of the electrode has a series of radially-projecting flexible filaments. The filaments are composed of an electrically conductive material and are supported by the body so as to be electrically charged. At least one of the filaments project outwardly into engagement with the wall of the downhole. The filaments also project radially outward into the consolidated formation.

Electrode

A jumper providing electrical communication between two components of a producing well of an oil field. The jumper has two tubings for insertion in two components each with an anchor adapted to be rigidly mounted in its associated component. Each tubing has a centering device, consisting of a pair of rings surrounding the tubing and an array of bowed springs bridging between the rings and biased to bow outwardly into engagement with the bore of the associated component. One of the two rings is electrically and mechanically connected to the tubing, whereas the other ring is free to be displaced longitudinally of the tubing so that the outer diameter of the array of bowed el springs may expand or contract, as needed. Each bowed spring in the array is provided with supplemental electrical contacts to insure a path of electrical conductivity between the connected ring and the associated component through the bowed springs.

Electrical jumper for a producing oil well

A method of enhancing oil production from an oil bearing formation includes the steps of providing a first borehole in a first region of the formation and a second borehole in a second region of the formation. A first electrode is positioned in the first borehole in the first region, and a second electrode is positioned in proximity to the second borehole in the second region. A voltage difference is established between the first and second electrodes to create an electric field across the plugging materials. The electric field is applied to destabilize the plugging materials and improve oil flow through the formation.

Method for enhancing oil production using electricity

A system for producing gas from a gas hydrate formation includes a first electrode and a second electrode. The first electrode is disposed in proximity of a first region of the formation, and the second electrode is disposed within a second region of the formation. The second electrode is separated from the first electrode by an electro-conductive path through the formation. An extraction well extends within the formation and intersects the electro-conductive path. The well comprises one or more perforations in fluid communication with the formation. A voltage source is connected to the electrodes and operates to produce a voltage difference across the electrodes. A method for extracting gases from a gas hydrate formation includes the step of establishing a voltage difference across two or more electrodes in a hydrate formation to thermally react with the hydrate formation and release gas from the formation.

Method and system for producing methane gas from methane hydrate formations

An electrode assembly comprising concentric tubular electrodes is provided for high temperature processing of materials. The electrode assembly is connected with a power supply that includes switching means for alternatively operating the electrode assembly in a transferred mode of operation, in a non-transferred mode of operation, or according to a controlled sequence of non-transferred and transferred modes of operation. The power supply system includes variable inductors, such as leakage-coupled reactors, for controlling the electrical power supplied to the electrodes for producing a DC arc. The electrode assembly can be incorporated into an arc furnace for processing waste material in the furnace. The electrode assembly is also suitable for use in the practice of in-situ vitrification and remediation of contaminated soil. During in-situ vitrification, the electrode assembly may also be operated in the non-transferred mode, while being withdrawn from holes in the earth, to produce vitrified columns of soil. The vitrified columns of soil can be coalesced with similar adjacent columns of soil in order to form a composite or unitary subterranean mass or barrier for contaminated material in a selected area. Multiple electrode assemblies can be employed to treat contamination located within a large area. An AC potential can be applied to adjacent electrode assemblies in order to promote coalescence of the adjacent columns of treated soil to form a composite or unitary mass.

Concentric electrode DC arc systems and their use in processing waste materials

A method is provided for recovering oil from a subterranean oil-bearing formation. One or more pairs of electrodes are inserted into the ground in proximity to a body of oil in said formation. A voltage difference is then established between the electrodes to create an electric field in the oil-bearing formation. As voltage is applied, the current is manipulated to induce oxidation and reduction reactions in components of the oil. The oxidation and reduction reactions lower the viscosity in the oil and thereby reduce capillary resistance to oil flow so that the oil can be removed at an extraction well.

Concentric electrode DC arc system and their use in processing waste materials

In an arc furnace or melter furnace employing concentric graphite inner and outer electrodes, the accumulations of tolerances, distortion and mechanical forces can cause a loss of concentricity leading to reduced performance and eventually to electrode degradation. To avoid that condition, a plurality of insulating spherical or cylindrical spacers are disposed in the annular gap between the inner and outer electrodes. The spacers are held in position by arcuate recesses in the outer surface of the inner electrode or in the inner surface of the outer electrode. The electrodes may be constructed in segments that are assembled by threading one segment into another segment.

Concentric electrode DC arc systems and their use in processing waste

An electrokinetic system and method are provided for removing charged species from a sample in which said charged species is commingled with at least one radionuclide. The apparatus comprises an anode compartment comprising an anode, a cathode compartment comprising a cathode, and a treatment zone in fluid communication with the anode and cathode compartments for containing the sample. The anode compartment, cathode compartment, and treatment zone are arranged so that a voltage gradient applied between the anode and the cathode induces an electrical current flow through the sample in the treatment zone. The current causes migration of the positively charged species in the sample toward the cathode and the negatively charges species toward the anode. A pH controller is provided for monitoring and adjusting acidity and basicity to facilitate the removal of salts while maintaining contaminants within the sample.

Electrochemical system and method for the removal of charged species

Radiometer with a probe beam superimposed on its field-of-view for furnace temperature measurements. The radiometer includes a heterodyne millimeter/submillimeter-wave receiver including a millimeter/submillimeter-wave source for probing. The receiver is adapted to receive radiation from a surface whose temperature is to be measured. The radiation includes a surface emission portion and a surface reflection portion which includes the probe beam energy reflected from the surface. The surface emission portion is related to the surface temperature and the surface reflection portion is related to the emissivity of the surface. The simultaneous measurement of surface emissivity serves as a real time calibration of the temperature measurement.

Active radiometer for self-calibrated furnace temperature measurements

Microwave-induced plasma for continuous, real time trace element monitoring under harsh and variable conditions. The sensor includes a source of high power microwave energy and a shorted waveguide made of a microwave conductive, refractory material communicating with the source of the microwave energy to generate a plasma. The high power waveguide is constructed to be robust in a hot, hostile environment. It includes an aperture for the passage of gases to be analyzed and a spectrometer is connected to receive light from the plasma. Provision is made for real time in situ calibration. The spectrometer disperses the light, which is then analyzed by a computer. The sensor is capable of making continuous, real time quantitative measurements of desired elements, such as the heavy metals lead and mercury.

Electric arc furnace and method suitable for use in the decomposition of hazardous materials such as polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and the like. The furnace has an electrically conductive hearth which is connected electrically to the bottom wall of the furnace shell. The arc producing potential is applied to the upper portions of a central electrode and the outer shell of the furnace, and the arc current flows in a coaxial manner in the central electrode and the side wall of the outer shell. The electrical connection between the hearth and the bottom wall of the outer shell is made by a plurality of electrode plates which extend upwardly from the bottom wall into the hearth. The electrode plates are arranged in a circular pattern of slightly greater diameter than the lower tip of the electrode, and the arc has a radial field component which causes it to rotate about the lower tip of the electrode. The potential is applied to the upper portion of the outer shell in a symmetrical manner to provide a substantially uniform distribution of current around the side wall.
