The controllable suspension system includes a strut with a magnetorheological fluid damper. The magnetorheological fluid damper includes a longitudinal damper tubular housing having a longitudinally extending axis and an inner wall for containing magnetorheological fluid. The damper includes a piston head movable within the damper tubular housing along a longitudinal length the housing, with the damper piston head providing a first upper variable volume magnetorheological fluid chamber and a second lower variable volume magnetorheological fluid chamber, with a fluid flow gap between the upper and lower fluid chambers, the damper piston having a longitudinal piston rod for supporting the piston head within the housing, with the piston supported within the housing with a piston rod bearing assembly disposed between the housing and the rod, with the piston rod bearing assembly having a piston rod bearing seal interface.

Controllable vehicle suspension system with a controllable magnetorheological fluid strut

A curable composition comprising magnetically active elastic microspheres that are filled with a curing agent. The elastomeric microspheres are predispersed throughout the curable resin and are magnetostrictive. Cure of the adhesive is initiated when an external magnetic field is applied that physically distorts or ruptures the magnetic microspheres due to a magnetostrictive effect from the magnetic field.

The invention provides a rotating tub washer with an on-off binary damper system for damping a problematic movement between the washer frame and the rotating tub. The on-off binary damper system has a friction pad and a housing friction damper surface, with the friction pad in contact with said housing friction damper surface. The on-off binary damper system has an electromagnetic coil core and a magnetic locking slide with a slide gap between said electromagnetic coil core and said magnetic locking slide to provide for relative sliding motion between the electromagnetic coil core and the magnetic locking slide, wherein a current supplied to said electromagnetic coil core removes the slide gap and electromagnetically locks the electromagnetic coil core and the magnetic locking slide together with the relative sliding motion transferred to the friction pad, with the friction pad rubbing against said housing friction damper surface inorder to dampen the problematic movement between the frame and the rotating tub.

A system that includes a magnetically actuated motion control device comprising a housing defining a cavity and including a slot therethrough. A movable member is located within the cavity and is movable relative to the housing. A magnetic field generator located on either the housing or the movable member causes the housing to press against the movable member to develop a friction force.

An apparatus comprising a frame; a member movable relative to said frame; a damping device interconnected between the frame and the movable member; a controller for activating the damper to generate a damping condition at a predetermined member operating condition; and system for activating the damping device at a predetermined operating condition of the moving member during a loss of power to the apparatus. The damping device may comprise a field controllable damper that includes a volume of field controllable fluid, which may in turn comprise magnetorheological fluid for example. The rheology of the field controllable fluid is effected during the application of the field.

A magnetically actuated motion control device includes a housing defining a cavity and including a slot therethrough. A movable member is located within the cavity and is movable relative to the housing. A magnetic field generator located on either the housing or the movable member causes the housing to press against the movable member to develop a friction force. The flux caused by the magnetic field flows through the housing, the movable member and at least one pole located along the movable member. The at least one pole comprises a first portion having a first axial dimension and a second portion having a second axial dimension where the first axial dimension is greater than the second axial dimension and as a result the magnetic flux through the second portion of the at least one pole has a greater magnitude than the magnetic flux through the first portion of the pole.

Magnetically actuated motion control device

A temporary joint that includes a first discrete member having a first edge and a first movable coupling means; and a second discrete member having a second edge and a second movable coupling means. When it is necessary to form a joint between the first and second discrete members, the first and second edges are moved into abutment to define a binding edge. Then, the first and second movable coupling means are moved toward the binding edge; and the temporary joint is formed when the first and second movable coupling means are proximate the binding edge. The joint is broken by moving the first and second coupling means away from the binding edge. The first coupling means is comprised of a volume of a field responsive material and the second coupling means is a field producing means such as a magnet. A rigid joint is produced when the field producing supplies a field across the field responsive material.

A system and method for monitoring the composition of a magnetically permeable material, where the system comprises a first container containing a volume of magnetically permeable material; a flow path for flowing the magnetically permeable material out of the container; a sensor for determining the inductance of the magnetically permeable material; and a sensor for determining the density of the magnetically permeable material. The sensors for determining the density and inductance of the magnetically permeable material are flow connected to the flow path.
