SR-IOV (single root IO virtualization) capable PCIe devices can implement virtual functions (VFs) that are assigned to VMs running on a host machine, thereby speeding IO operation by writing directly to the VMs' memory while bypassing the hypervisor managing the VMs. As such, VFs thwart the dirty page tracking that hypervisors use to minimize VM downtime when the VM is migrated between hosts. The SR-IOV PCIe devices can help resolve this problem by maintaining dirty page tracking data for VMs running on the host machine. The SR-IOV PCIe devices bypassing the hypervisor while writing into a memory page of the VM can set the dirty page tracking data to indicate the memory pages that are dirty (i.e., written to by the VF), and can provide access to the dirty page tracking data. The hypervisor can thereby obtain and use the dirty page tracking data.

Methods and systems for using a peripheral device to assist virtual machine IO memory access tracking

Methods and apparatuses for a programmable IO device interface are provided. The apparatus may comprise: a first memory unit having a plurality of programs stored thereon, the plurality of programs are associated with a plurality of actions comprising updating memory based data structure, inserting a DMA command or initiating an event; a second memory unit for receiving and storing a table result, and the table result is provided by a table engine configured to perform packet match operations on (i) a packet header vector contained in a header portion and (ii) data stored in a programmable match table; and circuitry for executing a program selected from the plurality of programs in response to the table result and an address received by the apparatus, and the program is executed until completion and the program is associated with the programmable match table.

Programmable computer IO device interface

Described are programmable IO devices installed on a host device and configured to execute instructions that cause the programmable IO device to perform operations to establish a virtual link between another programmable IO device installed on the host device and provide a data plane using the virtual link. These operations comprise: establishing the virtual link with the other programmable IO device installed on the host device, wherein the virtual link provides a communication channel between the programmable IO devices; providing the data plane by establishing, with the other programmable IO device via the virtual link, a data path associated with the data plane; receiving a packet in the data plane destined for the other programmable IO device; and forwarding the packet to the other programmable IO device via the virtual link.

A method includes receiving a first interrupt request from a first device instance of a plurality of device instances. The first interrupt request is requesting an interrupt of a processor. The method also includes updating a bit vector based on the first interrupt request. The bit vector comprises a plurality of bits representing an accumulation of interrupt requests. The method further includes generating a gang interrupt comprising the updated bit vector. The method also includes transmitting the gang interrupt to call a first device driver associated with the first interrupt request based on the bits in the bit vector.
