The amount of manganese in the weld fumes generated by an arc welding process can be reduced without reducing the concentration of manganese in the weld deposit ultimately obtained by supplying the manganese to the weld site by the hot wire welding electrode of a hot wire welding process.

Low manganese fume welding process

The electrical resistance between a welding wire used for arc welding and the welding gun contact tip through which it passes is reduced by providing on the surfaces of the welding wire a solid conductor comprising an electrically conductive perovskite or other thermally stable, electrically conductive particulate solid.

Welding wire with perovskite coating

The copper cladding normally applied to the surfaces of a submerged arc welding wire for preventing weld gun contact tip abrasive wear is replaced with a solid lubricant. This eliminates copper contamination of the weld from the copper cladding while preserving the useful life of the contact tip.
