A polymeric reaction product, a process for its preparation and a coating composition containing the reaction product as a binder are described. The polymeric reaction product is prepared by the vinyl addition polymerization of a vinyl monomer component of which at least 50 percent by weight is an active hydrogen-containing vinyl monomer in the presence of a polymeric diluent. The rate of polymerization is controlled such that the amount of unreacted vinyl monomer, on the average, does not exceed 10 percent by weight of the total weight of the reaction mixture.

An air oxidizable coating composition is disclosed comprising an ungelled urethane modified alkyd resin containing pendant polymerizable unsaturated groups attached to the alkyd through urethane linkages. The ungelled urethane modified alkyd is the reaction product of components comprising a hydroxyl containing, air oxidizable alkyd resin having an oil length of between about 20 percent and about 70 percent and an isocyanate-functional ethylenically unsaturated compound. Esters of imidazolidinedione-based diepoxides are especially useful in coating compositions having a low organic solvent content. Hydroxy-functional esters of substituted imidazolidinediones have the formula: ##STR1## where X is hydrogen, ##STR2## provided both X's are not hydrogen, where R and R' are independently hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, with one Y being hydrogen, one Z being hydrogen and the other Y and Z being ##STR3## where the R' groups are independently hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 17 carbon atoms. Amide modified saturated polyester polyols having an acid number of from about 0 to about 27, a hydroxyl number of from about 12 to about 360 and an amine number of from about 0.1 to about 6.5 are disclosed. The amide modified saturated polyester polyols are useful as part of a two-package urethane coating system.
