A signal processing device having a video signal input, a circuit for processing a video signal, a generating device for generating a character signal, and a memory for storing the video signal to be processed and for storing the character signal generated by the generating device. The processing circuit may include a high-efficiency encoding unit for compressing information of the video signal and encoding the video signal, or a high-efficiency decoding unit for decoding the video signal and expanding the decoded video signal, and the memory has a first area to be accessed by the encoding unit or by the decoding unit and a second area used by the generating device to generate the character signal.

A CCD converts an optical image of an object formed on its image sensing surface into electrical charges, and sequentially outputs the electrical charges of all of the light receiving pixels in one scanning operation in non-interlaced form. The outputs from the CCD are converted to the digital image signals by an analog-digital converter. A camera signal processing unit processes the digital image signals, thereby generating two streams of signals; one is digital video signals SV which are standard digital video signals in interlaced form, and the other is signals SV which are not outputted as the digital video signals SV out of the digital image signals of all of the light receiving pixels. These two streams of signals, SV and SV , are processed differently depending upon a mode selected by a switch.

A movement detection device includes a first detection unit which detects a high-frequency component of an image signal in units of blocks each consisting of a plurality of pixel data. A second detection unit detects a low-frequency component of the image signal in units of blocks, and a discrimination unit discriminates a movement of the image signal in accordance with outputs from the first and second detection units. Also included is an encoding apparatus having an input unit which inputs image data, and a block forming unit which divides the input image data input into blocks. An orthogonal transform unit orthogonally transforms the image data blocks, and a quantization unit quantizes the orthogonally transformed image data. A detection unit detects the degree of fineness of each image data block, and a control unit performs switching control of a processing method of the orthogonal transform unit in accordance with an output from the detection unit.

Movement detection device and encoding apparatus using the same

The amount of edge enhancement outputted from an amount-of-edge-enhancement computing circuit is determined on the basis of the degree of sharpness of the edge independently of a zoom magnification. In the meantime, in an enhancement coefficient computing circuit, an enhancement coefficient according to the zoom magnification is computed. In a multiplier, the output from the amount-of-edge-enhancement computing circuit (the amount of edge enhancement) is multiplied by the output from the enhancement coefficient computing circuit (the enhancement coefficient). The resultant amount of edge correction is outputted from the multiplier. Accordingly, the amount of edge correction outputted from the multiplier takes a value according to the zoom magnification. According to this arrangement, enhancement processing which does not bring about overcorrection or unprocessing can be applied to the edge portion of an image enlarged by electronic zoom. In consequence, it is possible to enhance the apparent resolution of the image enlarged by electronic zoom.

An apparatus includes a reproducing circuit for reproducing an encoded image signal from a recording medium, a decoding circuit for decoding the image signal reproduced by the reproducing circuit, a movement detection circuit for detecting a movement of an image signal which cannot be detected by the decoding circuit, and outputting a signal indicating the movement level of the undecodable signal, and a construction circuit for constructing an image signal with respect to the undecodable image signal on the basis of the output from the movement detection means. Even when an undecodable image signal is an intermediate signal between signals with and without a movement, a good reproduced image is obtained.
