A hip protecting device for minimizing risk of hip breakage upon a fall having a belt from which one or two gas inflatable pockets are suspended substantially over the hip joint or hip joints of a wearer. The hip protecting device further has a means for detecting rate and degree of attitudinal changes of the wearer, a microprocessor and inflation means. Upon detection of both a rate and degree of change in attitude of the wearer outside certain preprogrammed limits, the microprocessor sends a signal to the inflation means thereby causing the pocket or pockets to inflate and cushion the hips from the fall.

Hip protector

An artificial heart device for minimizing the damage to blood cells having electromagnetically driven pistons which move the blood around and through a toroidal chamber. In first and second preferred embodiments no motor is used to drive the pistons and the pistons are suspended within the toroid by cycling of electromagnets. In a third preferred embodiment the pistons are moved with the use of motor-driven magnets. In each embodiment blood is sucked into the toroidal chamber through one or more intake openings and blood exits the toroidal chamber through one or more outflow openings.

Circular artificial heart

An emergency signal device for use by those with medical conditions having means to detect the occurrence of a change in attitude in conjunction with a shock and an alarm means including audible messages alerting bystanders to the wearer's medical problems. The emergency signal device may also include means to activate the alarm means in the event the wearer exits a pre-specified geographic area, or at pre-specified time intervals. The emergency signal device may also include cellular and global positioning satellite means to automatically determine and transmit the location of the emergency signal device to a cellular base station upon activation of the alarm. The emergency signal device may further include means for activating existing emergency telephone notification systems.

Emergency signaling device

A disposable diaphragm assembly for use with al types of conventional stethoscopes and a universal retainer ring for retro-fitting conventional stethoscopes to accept the disposable diaphragm assembly. A novel stethoscope for use with the disposable diaphragm assemblies. A stationary dispenser for the disposable diaphragm assemblies from which the assemblies may be loaded onto either retrofitted conventional stethoscopes or the novel stethoscope of this invention without the assembly being contaminated by the hands of medical personnel. Portable and disposable dispensers which also provide for the loading of the disposable diaphragm assembly in a manner which prevents the assembly from becoming contaminated by the hands of medical personnel.

Disposable stethoscope diaphragm and dispenser

A sanitary stethoscope which prevents carrying potentially infectious matter from one patient to the next comprises a modified stethoscope head or diaphragm-retaining ring and a quick-insert/quick-release replaceable diaphragm. The diaphragm is suitably held in place on the stethoscope by means of a projection on the diaphragm surface which fits into a groove on the stethoscope head or diaphragm-retaining ring, preferably with provision for magnetic attraction. Means for facilitating easy exchange of diaphragms comprise specially designed diaphragm dispensers and diaphragm storage containers or cartridges. The diaphragm dispensers may be heated to maintain the diaphragms at a temperature comfortable to the touch.
