When the two-axis drive mechanism is driven at a maximum speed, processing is executed in which a speed (t) slower than the maximum speed is inserted by a program. Further, drive current flowing through the motor for driving the two-axis drive mechanism is set. A phase exciting method of a stepping motor is switched.

In a method of and an apparatus for drivingly controlling an automatic sewing machine, the time for which a work holding unit is drivingly processed every seam lengths, the time from start of the drive processing of the work holding unit to the time at which the work holding unit starts movement, and the time of movement of the work holding unit are set whereby a drive signal of the work holding unit is controlled such that the work holding unit starts movement and is terminated in movement during a period for which a needle passes through a sewing material. The cloth retainer driving device includes a cloth retainer positioning and holding mechanism detachably positioning and holding the cloth retainer, and a driving mechanism driving the positioning and holding mechanism to automatically perform holding and release of the cloth retainer. The driving mechanism drives the positioning and holding mechanism in response to an instruction signal supplied from a control device prior to the start of sewing to automatically positioning and hold the cloth retainer, and automatically releases the positioning and holding of the cloth retainer upon the completion of sewing.
