A novel tertiary alkylsilane is disclosed, which is useful as a variety of starting materials such as for photoreactive materials including semiconductor materials, insulative materials and photoresists, polymerization initiators and silicone-based ceramics precursors and is contributive to the safe and efficient production of high grade semiconductors.

A photovoltaic element produced from a product resulting from decomposition of a silicon polymer having an organic substituent of the group consisting of a hydrocarbon group, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, and a silyl group R.sup.3 R.sup.4 R.sup.5 Si- (wherein R.sup.3 -R.sup.5 each are identical or different, including C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl groups and C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl groups). The present invention provides a novel liquid crystalline polyester comprising structural units represented by the following general formulae A, B, C and D: ##STR1## where X and Y are each independently H, Cl, Br or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the molar ratio of A/B is in the range from 49/1 to 20/30 and that of C/D is in the range from 10/40 to 45/5.

Liquid crystalline polyesters

It is intended to provide a liquid crystalline polyester whose orientation in the state of liquid crystal can be easily immobilized as glass phase and which is suitable for application to optical elements. A liquid crystalline polyester comprising repeating units a, b, c and d represented by the following general formulae: ##STR1## where X and Y are each independently a hydrogen atom, Cl, Br or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the repeating units a, b, c and d being in mole ratios such that (a+b)/(c+d) is approximately 1, a/b is in the range from 98/2 to 50/50 and c/d is in the range from 70/30 to 10/90.
