A process for treating molten cast iron with pure magnesium wherein a granular mixture of magnesium granules admixed with granules of refractory material is flooded with molten iron. By employing granular refractory material of controlled size in the granular mixture, the rate of absorption of magnesium into the iron melt may be effectively controlled so as to optimize magnesium introduction at minimal costs.

A process for treating molten cast iron in an open ladle by means of pure magnesium is proposed, wherein the pure magnesium is introduced in a multiplicity of very small magnesium particles, coated with a protective layer, into the molten cast iron. The protective layer, which protects the magnesium from premature melting and controls the reaction rate, is produced from ceramics. The process can be carried out with very simple equipment. Involved pretreatments of the treatment agent are unnecessary.

Process for treating molten cast iron in an open ladle by means of pure

A process for the production of nodular cast iron is disclosed. The process comprises adding magnesium to molten iron and then desulphurizing the melt. Next, the melt is after-treated with a neutral gas. The neutral gas which is introduced into the melt may be Ar, N.sub.2, CO.sub.2, or any combination thereof. The after-treatment with the neutral gas scavenges the melt for nonmetallic inclusions. The after-treatment may be performed by blowing the gas into the melt in a known manner using blowing lances or through a porous plug. In a preferred embodiment, the melt is also carburized by treatment with a gaseous hydrocarbon.

Process for the production of nodular cast iron

A wall member for a converter chamber for the treatment of cast iron melt with magnesium. The size and shape of the wall member of a converter have a decisive influence on the efficiency of the treatment of a cast iron metal in a converter and on the accuracy of obtaining a residual magnesium content. For an optimum control of this influence, the length L of the wall member is determined in accordance with the formula L=600.times.T.sup.0.45 .times.A and the height H is determined in accordance with the formula H=0.5 L.times.A, wherein A is a coefficient ranging between 0.5 to 1.5 depending upon the sulfur content of 0.01 to 0.15% by weight and depending upon the thickness of the refractory lining of the converter vessel ranging from 40 to 150 mm.

A method of keeping inductor spouts, downgates and outlet casting channels and the like free of deposits during the production of a cast iron melt involves treatment with pure magnesium. Such deposits, which occur as reaction products and block the channels causing considerable maintenance expense, are prevented by the use of pure magnesium. The cast iron melt is flushed free of suspended highly basic reaction products, such as MgO, CaO, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, FeO and MgS, in a predetermined magnesium treatment of the cast iron melt with pure magnesium by a simultaneous evaporation of magnesium not consumed in the magnesium treatment. By preventing the formation of deposits, the life of the vessel used is increased and maintenance costs are decreased.

In an ingot mould casting device for casting a melt, the ingot moulds (1, 1a, 1b) of the individual ingot mould units (35, 36, 37) are movable in a U-shaped clamp (13), wherein at the free ends (43) of the U-shaped clamp (13) there is provided an ingot mould holding- and pulling-apart mechanism. With the aid of this ingot mould holding-and pulling-apart mechanism, the ingot moulds are opened so far, after casting has been effected in the casting position, until the resistance during pulling-apart of the ingot mould (1, 1a, 1b) drops to the resistance with respect to the shifting of the ingot mould half (1b) movable on the guide rods (2). In a second phase, the movable ingot mould half (1b) is moved completely away from the non-movable ingot mould half (1a). The discharged parts fall onto the conveyor belt (18). The entire operation from the actuation of the starting button (42) of an ingot mould arrangement can take place automatically. Thus it is advantageous to use suitable sensors for monitoring the entire casting procedure.

A method of vaporizing additives in a metal melt. The method is carried out in a vessel which has a chamber in which at least one additive is placed. The geometric configuration of the chamber and the total cross-sectional area of the openings are adjusted in relation to the amount T of metal melt, so that a vaporization t=68.times.T.sup.0.22 .times.A is obtained. This method has the advantage that parameters, such as, residual magnesium content can be accurately reproduced.

Method of vaporizing additives in metal melts

A process for the production of cast iron containing spheroidal graphite is disclosed. In the process, the iron melt, which contains sulphur, is treated with metallic magnesium, forming unstable MgS as a by-product. By the addition of CaSi, the sulphur contained in the MgS present in the slag is converted into stable CaS. As a result, the free sulphur which is released upon decomposition of MgS when the melt is allowed to stand for a fairly long time is prevented from going back again into the melt, reacting there with the dissolved magnesium, and forming MgS once again. Through the stabilization of the sulphur in the form of CaS in the slag itself, resulphurization is effectively prevented. The slag can remain on the melt surface for a longer time than hitherto. The slag provides a heat-insulating effect, so that even longer standing times which are possibly required in certain production processes, can be utilized.

An auxiliary device for use with a permanent mold in casting operations includes a cover plate having an upwardly and a downwardly facing surface. In place on the permanent mold, the downwardly facing surface defines the upper limit of the mold cavity. At least one pipe extends through an opening in the cover plate with its lower end in the plane of the downwardly facing surface of the cover plate. An annular recess located in one of the downwardly facing surface of the cover plate or the lower end of the pipe, encircles the lower end of the pipe radially outwardly from its opening. A breaking core can be incorporated as a part of the lower end of the pipe or it can be formed as a separate member. The pipe can be used only to feed additional molten metal into the mold as the poured metal starts to solidify or it can be used both to pour the molten metal into the mold cavity and then to provide the additional feed as the metal solidifies.

Auxiliary device for use with a permanent mold in casting operations

A device is provided for protecting the inner walls of casting molds, particularly molds of the permanent type which are filled by top pouring of the molten casting material thereinto, and for improving the surface quality of the castings formed in the mold. The device is formed from material which enables the device to be integrated into the casting formed in the mold and the protective device is configured with a bottom plate and a pair of laterally spaced upstanding side walls formed of sheet material. The protective device is placed in the bottom of the mold cavity and is located directly beneath the jet of molten casting material being poured into the mold. A wire lattice may be placed upon the protective device spaced above the bottom plate thereof or an upstanding tubular socket may be formed on the bottom plate.
