An optical transmission fiber comprises a central core having an index difference &#x394;nwith an outer optical cladding; a first inner cladding having an index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding; and a second buried inner cladding having an index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding of less than &#x2212;3&#xb7;10. The second buried inner cladding moreover contains Germanium in a weight concentration of between 0.5% and 7%. The fiber shows reduced bending and microbending losses while exhibiting the optical performances of a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).

Single mode optical fiber

Disclosed is a method of heat treating quartz glass deposition tubes at between 900&#xb0; C. and 1200&#xb0; C. for at least 115 hours. The resulting deposition tubes are useful in forming optical preforms that can yield optical fibers having reduced added loss.

Glass-tube extended-baking process

Extended-baking process for glass deposition tubes

An improved optical fiber achieves both reduced bending and microbending losses, as well as a much higher Brillouin threshold, as compared to standard transmission fibers. The optical fiber comprises a core including at least two dopants and having a refractive index difference &#x394;nwith an outer optical cladding, a first inner cladding having a refractive index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding, and a depressed, second inner cladding having a refractive index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding of less than &#x2212;3&#xd7;10. The radial concentration of at least one of the core dopants varies continuously over the entire core region of the optical fiber.

Optical fiber

A single mode optical transmission fiber comprises a depressed core having at least 0.41 weight percent fluorine and an index difference (|&#x394;n|) with pure silica greater than 1.5&#xd7;10, a depressed cladding having at least 1.2 weight percent fluorine and an index difference (|&#x394;n|) with pure silica greater than 4.5&#xd7;10and an index difference (|&#x394;n|&#x2212;|&#x394;n|) with the depressed core greater than or equal to 3&#xd7;10.

Fluorine-doped optical fiber

An optical transmission fiber includes a central core having an index difference &#x394;nwith an outer optical cladding; a first inner cladding having an index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding; and a second buried inner cladding having an index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding of less than &#x2212;3.10. The second buried inner cladding moreover contains Germanium in a weight concentration of between 0.5% and 7%. The fiber shows reduced bending and microbending losses whilst exhibiting the optical performances of a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).

An optical fiber having a given refractive index profile comprises a core region and a cladding region. The core region includes at least two co-dopants and the concentration of at least one of said core dopant varies continuously over the entire core region. The optical fiber has, at a wavelength of 1550 nm, a spontaneous Brillouin spectrum width equal or larger to 100 MHz. The optical fiber of the invention achieves a much higher Brillouin threshold compared to standard transmission fibers with limited fiber loss, less than 0.3 dB/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and without change in the optical transmission parameters of the fiber.
