A head-mountable device can include an optical module to present visual information to a user, a structure movably attached to the optical module, the structure defining a motion path of the optical module. The structure can include a housing defining an internal volume, and a battery disposed within the internal volume.

A display and vision correction system includes a head-mounted display unit, a glasses frame, and a removable lens assembly. The head-mounted display unit is configured to be worn on a head of a user and includes a display for providing graphical content to the user. The glasses frame is configured to be worn on the head of the user. The removable lens assembly is removably coupleable to the head-mounted display unit and to the glasses frame. The removable lens assembly includes a corrective lens element.

Display and vision correction system with removable lens

A head-mounted device may have left and right optical modules that present images to a user's eyes. Each optical module may have an optical module support structure and a lens and display coupled to the optical module support structure. The head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing that supports the optical modules. A cover on a rear face of the head-mounted housing may have a pair of openings configured to receive the left and right optical modules. The cover may have a cover layer and left and right cover layer mounting rings respectively configured to engage with the optical module support structures of the left and right optical modules. Sets of magnets in the left and right optical modules may be configured to attract corresponding left and right vision correction lenses. Gaskets may surround the lenses in the optical modules and may prevent environmental contaminant intrusion.

A head-mountable display device includes a housing defining a front opening and a rear opening, a display screen disposed in the front opening, a display assembly disposed in the rear opening, a first securement strap coupled to the housing, the first securement strap including a first electronic component, a second securement strap coupled to the housing, the second securement strap including a second electronic component, and a securement band extending between and coupled to the first securement strap and the second securement strap.

Head mountable display

An optical module for a head-mounted device is configured to present content to a user. The optical module includes an optical module housing assembly, a display assembly, and an eye camera. The optical module housing assembly has a first end and a second end. The lens is connected to the optical module housing assembly and positioned at the first end of the optical module housing assembly. The display assembly is connected to the optical module housing assembly and is positioned at the second end of the optical module housing assembly. The display assembly is configured to cause the content to be displayed to the user through the lens. The eye camera is connected to the optical module housing assembly and is positioned at the second end of the optical module housing assembly. The eye camera is configured to obtain images through the lens.

Optical module for head-mounted device

A head-mounted display a housing, two display modules, and a head support. The two display modules ae coupled to the housing. Each of the two display modules includes a display for outputting light that forms graphical content, a lens for refracting the light output by the display, and an eye illuminator. The eye illuminator includes a light-emitting diode, a flexible circuit to which the light-emitting diode is coupled, and a stiffener laminated to the flexible circuit with one or fewer layers of adhesive. The lens is removably coupled to the display indirectly by the stiffener. The head support is coupled to the housing for supporting the housing on a head of a user with the two display modules positioned to provide the graphical content to eyes of the user.

Head-mounted display and display modules thereof

A head-mountable device can provide adjustable size and shape for storage, transport, and/or charging. A head-mountable device can provide a bistable adjustment mechanism, such as a bistable hinge, that biases a component of the head-mountable device to either of two configurations. Such adjustability can be provided by a light seal module of the head-mountable device and can facilitate collapse of a head securement element, such as arms for engaging the head of the user.

Collapsible head-mountable device

A wearable electronic device includes a head-mounted display (HMD) and a retention band connected to the HMD. The retention band can include a display assembly positioned within the retention band for displaying visual information on an exterior of the retention band.

Notifications in headbands

A head-mountable display can include a structural frame defining a viewing opening, an optical module coupled to the structural frame. The optical module can include a display screen to project light through the viewing opening. The display screen can define an inner edge, an outer edge opposite the inner edge, a lower edge extending between the inner edge and the outer edge, and an upper edge opposite the lower edge. The optical module can include a first camera disposed adjacent the inner edge and closer to the lower edge than the upper edge, and a second camera disposed adjacent the lower edge and closer to the outer edge than the inner edge.

To accommodate variations in the interpupillary distances associated with different users, a head-mounted device may have left-eye and right-eye optical modules that move with respect to each other. Each optical module may have a display that creates an image and a corresponding lens that provides the image to an associated eye box for viewing by a user. The optical modules each include a lens barrel to which the display and lens of that optical module are mounted and a head-mounted optical module illumination system. The illumination system may have light-emitting devices such as light-emitting diodes that extend along some or all of a peripheral edge of the display. The light-emitting diodes may be mounted on a flexible printed circuit with a tail that extends a lens barrel opening. A stiffener for the flexible printed circuit may have openings that receive the light-emitting diodes.

Head-mounted device with optical module illumination systems

A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing. The housing may include a chassis with left and right openings that overlap respective left and right optical modules that present images eye boxes. Each optical module may have a lens and display that presents an image through the lens. The chassis may have an inner frame and outer frame. A middle portion of the chassis may form a stiffened nose bridge structure. Components in the housing such as a display, a fan housing, a heat sink layer, optical module guide rods, and a rear cover may span the width of the housing and may be attached to edge portions of the chassis, thereby forming a box-shaped structure that provides rigidity and helps prevent housing deformation.

Head-mounted electronic device

A head-mounted device may have optical modules that present images to a user's eyes. Each optical module may have a lens barrel with a display and a lens that presents an image from the display to a corresponding eye box. To accommodate users with different interpupillary distances, the optical modules may be slidably coupled to guide members such as guide rods. Actuators may slide the optical modules towards or away from each other along the guide rods. The guide rods may be formed from fiber-composite tubes with end caps that are fastened to a frame in the head-mounted device. The tubes may be partly or completely filled with cores to add strength. Low-friction coatings such as metal coatings may be formed on the fiber-composite tubes and the corresponding inner surfaces of the optical module structures that slidably engage the fiber-composite tubes.

Electronic devices with optical module positioning systems

A head-mounted device may have optical modules that present images to a user's left and right eyes. Each optical module may have a lens barrel with a low-reflectance coating, a display coupled to the lens barrel that generates a visible-light image, a lens mounted to the lens barrel through which the image is viewable from an eye box, an infrared light-emitting diode that emits infrared light that illuminates an eye box at an infrared wavelength through the lens, and an infrared camera that captures an image from the eye box at the infrared wavelength. The low-reflectance coating may be a low-visible-reflectance-and-low-infrared-reflectance coating that exhibits low-reflectance for visible light from the display and for infrared light at the infrared wavelength that is generated by the light-emitting diode.

A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing. The housing may include a frame with left and right openings that receive respective left and right optical modules that present images to a user's eyes. Each optical module may have a lens and display that presents an image through the lens. Camera support members may be coupled to respective left and right peripheral portions of the frame. Each camera support member may have openings configured to receive cameras. Antennas may be formed on a camera support member. The antennas may have metal traces on a surface of the camera support member, may have conductive structures embedded within the camera support member, and/or may have patterned metal traces on printed circuits attached to or embedded in the camera support member. The cameras may operate through portions of a display cover layer that covers an outwardly-facing display on the head-mounted housing.
