A polymer useful in forming coatings for articles is provided. The polymer is an acrylic copolymer formed as the reaction product of a plurality of monomers which include an alkyl (meth)acrylate, a quaternary amine (meth)acrylate, a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate, an N-vinyl lactam, an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and a fluorinated (meth)acrylate. The polymer is formed in the presence of surfactants, preferably by sequential polymerization of two separate monomer mixtures. To form a coating, the polymer is blended with an elastomeric material such as nitrile rubber latex. The resulting coating is useful both as a print coating for substrates used with ink jet printers and as a coating for rubber articles.

Acrylic emulsion coating for films, paper and rubber

Emulsion polymers useful in the preparation of coatings and adhesives, including PSA tapes, labels, and other constructions, are provided. The polymers are characterized by high solids content and low viscosity. A method of making the polymers is also provided. A plurality of acrylic monomers are copolymerized in the presence of a plurality of surfactants, using a split feed, and the resulting emulsion polymers have a bimodal or higher particle-size distribution.

High solids content, low-viscosity emulsion polymers

Rubber articles are coated with a powder-free copolymer coating to provide improved mold release characteristics, improved donning characteristics, and improved tactile feel. The copolymer is formed by the polymerization of a low surface energy monomer, an alkyl acrylate, a hard monomer and a urethane oligomer. The copolymers are preferably formed by a sequential polymerization process.

Acrylate, silicone, styrene, urethane copolymer coatings for natural and synthetic rubber articles

Inherently tacky, pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions useful in marking film applications are provided. The compositions comprise polymer particles prepared by emulsion polymerization of at least one monomer mixture. The monomer mixture comprises at least one alkyl acrylate, the alkyl group of which has from about 4 to 12 carbon atoms, preferably in an amount of from about 73% to 90% by weight, at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid containing from about 3 to 5 carbon atoms, preferably in an amount of from about 2% to 12% by weight, and at least one hard monomer, preferably present in an amount of from about 5% to 15% by weight. The particles have a mean diameter of about 300 nm or less, as determined by laser light scattering. Preferably the hard monomer comprises a styrenic monomer, more preferably both a styrenic monomer and an alkyl methacrylate. In some embodiments, the compositions are prepared by sequential polymerization of the first and second monomer charges. The compositions may also contain one or more internal or external crosslinkers.

Pressure-sensitive adhesives for marking films

General purpose inherently tacky acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive polymers formed of alkyl acrylates, vinyl esters, and saturated carboxylic acids, having improved properties, a lower residual monomer content are formed by a sequential emulsion polymerization process in which 40 to 70 percent, typically 45 percent, of the monomers are incrementally added to a reactor as a first charge containing substantially all of the vinyl esters, the balance of the monomers being fed in a second incremental charge.

Process for the production of improved PSA's

Rubber articles are coated with a powder-free copolymer coating to provide improved mold release characteristics, improved donning characteristics, and improved tactile feel. The copolymer is formed by the polymerization of a at least one copolymerizable silicone oligomer, at least one alkyl acrylate, and at least one hard monomer. The hard monomer, when homopolymerized, has a glass transition temperature of at least 0.degree. C. The copolymers are preferably formed by a sequential polymerization process.

Acrylic emulsion coating for rubber articles

Inherently tacky polymerized copolymer particles are formed by emulsion polymerization for use as an PSA for marking films. The adhesives are the reaction product formed by emulsion polymerization of a first monomer mixture comprising at least one alkyl acrylate containing from 4 to about 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, at least one hard monomer, and at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid containing from 3 to about 5 carbon atoms and present in a total amount of from about 3 to about 6% by weight of the first monomers which there is added by the reaction product of a second monomer system comprising at least one alkyl acrylate containing from 4 to about 12 carbon atoms in at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer present containing from 3 to about 5 carbon atoms in present in a total amount from about 7 to about 10% by weight of the monomers, said second copolymer being substantially free of other hard monomers in which said first copolymer is present in an amount at least 50% by weight of the total copolymers and has a glass transition temperature from 0 to about -25.degree. C. The second copolymer has a glass transition temperature of from about -25.degree. C. The copolymers are preferentially formed by sequential polymerization.

Rubber articles are coated with a powder-free coating; the power-free/non-tacky coating comprises a copolymer formed by the sequential polymerization of two mixtures of monomers comprising styrene, alkyl acrylates, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and a silicone oligomer. The sequential polymerization of the two monomer mixtures produces a core copolymer surrounded by a shell copolymer, in which the two copolymers have differing glass transition temperatures.

Acrylic emulsion coatings

There are provided powder-free polymer coated rubber articles coated with a non-tacky acrylic based emulsion copolymer formed by polymerization of at least one low surface energy monomer, at least one alkyl acrylate and at least one hard monomer. The copolymers are preferably formed by sequential polymerization.

Acrylic emulsion coatings for formed articles

There are provided powder-free polymer coated rubber articles in which at least one surface of the rubber article is coated with a non-tacky acrylic based emulsion copolymer formed by polymerization of at least one low surface energy monomer, at least one alkyl acrylate and at least one hard monomer. The copolymers are preferably formed by sequential polymerization. The polymer coatings can be stretched with the rubber without flaking.

There is provided stock for labels and tapes having in the surface of a self supporting substrate and inherently tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive polymers prepared by emulsion polymerization and containing an interpolymerized amount of a reactive silicone acrylate polymer, an unsaturated carboxylic acid one or more alkyl acrylates, preferably a mixture of butyl acrylate and 2-ethylehexyl acrylate. Methyl acrylate and vinyl acetate are optionally present.

An emulsified pressure sensitive adhesive is provided which is based on a polymer containing from about 95 to 97.5% by weight of an alkyl ester of acrylic acid and from about 2.5 to 5% by weight of a mixture of carboxylic acids and a three component anionic surfactant system. There is provided inherently tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive polymers prepared by emulsion polymerization and containing an interpolymerized amount of a reactive silicone acrylate polymer, an unsaturated carboxylic acid one or more alkyl acrylates, preferably a mixture of butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. Methyl acrylate and vinyl acetate are optionally present. The polymers have initial repositionability, long term permanence and excellent water resistance.
