The present disclosure recognizes a correlation between zeolitic surface area (ZSA) of a catalyst composition and its catalytic activity. Particularly, the disclosure provides catalyst articles for diesel NOabatement, including a substrate and a washcoat layer containing metal-promoted molecular sieves, wherein the zeolitic surface area (ZSA) of the catalyst article is about 100 m/g or greater, the volumetric surface area is about 900 m/inor greater, and/or the total zeolitic surface area (tZSA) is about 1200 mor greater. The disclosure further relates to methods for evaluating ZSA, volumetric ZSA, and tZSA, e.g., including the steps of coating a catalyst composition comprising metal-promoted molecular sieves onto a substrate; calcining and aging the catalyst composition; determining the ZSA (or volumetric ZSA or tZSA) thereof; and correlating the ZSA (or volumetric ZSA or tZSA) with catalyst composition NOabatement activity to determine whether the catalyst composition is suitable for an intended use.

Provided are hydroisomerization catalysts for processing a bio-based feedstock into biodiesel fuels. These catalysts comprise a catalytic material and a matrix component. The catalytic material is made up of a molecular sieve that has a pre-loaded platinum group metal. The catalytic material and the matrix component are processed together to form the hydroisomerization catalyst. Methods of making these hydroisomerization catalysts include synthesizing a molecular sieve; purifying the molecular sieve; associating the molecular sieve with a platinum group metal in the absence of the matrix component to form the pre-loaded molecular sieve before formation of a catalyst body; mixing the pre-loaded molecular sieve with the matrix component to form a mixture; processing the mixture to form a catalyst body; and drying and calcining the catalyst body to form the hydroisomerization catalyst. These hydroisomerization catalysts can be used to process hydrodeoxygenated plant- or animal-derived feeds to yield a biofuel.

A heated mixture comprising dehydroxylated kaolin and a high refractive index pigment is disclosed. When the dehydroxylated kaolin is metakaolin, the heated mixture has a GE brightness greater than 86% and a Hunter yellowness index of less than about 11. When the dehydroxylated kaolin is fully calcined kaolin, the heated mixture has a GE brightness greater than 89%. The heated mixture is advantageously used in decorative paper. Also disclosed are methods of using and making the decorative paper, and decorative laminates containing the decorative paper.
