A display subsystem for a virtual image generation system for use by an end user comprises a planar waveguide apparatus, an optical fiber, at least one light source configured for emitting light from a distal end of the optical fiber, and a collimation element mounted to a distal end of the optical fiber for collimating light from the optical fiber. The virtual image generation system further comprises a mechanical drive assembly to which the optical fiber is mounted to the drive assembly. The mechanical drive assembly is configured for displacing the distal end of the optical fiber, along with the collimation element, in accordance with a scan pattern. The virtual image generation system further comprises an optical waveguide input apparatus configured for directing the collimated light from the collimation element down the planar waveguide apparatus, such that the planar waveguide apparatus displays image frames to the end user.

Microlens collimator for scanning optical fiber in virtual/augmented reality system

A display subsystem for a virtual image generation system comprises a planar waveguide apparatus, an optical fiber, at least one light source configured for emitting light from a distal end of the optical fiber, and a mechanical drive assembly to which the optical fiber is mounted as a fixed-free flexible cantilever. The drive assembly is configured for displacing a distal end of the optical fiber about a fulcrum in accordance with a scan pattern, such that the emitted light diverges from a longitudinal axis coincident with the fulcrum. The display subsystem further comprises an optical modulation apparatus configured for converging the light from the optical fiber towards the longitudinal axis, and an optical waveguide input apparatus configured for directing the light from the optical modulation apparatus down the planar waveguide apparatus, such that the planar waveguide apparatus displays one or more image frames to an end user.

A method is disclosed, the method comprising the steps of receiving, at a first time interval from a first sensor configured to output data indicative of a first position of an eye, first data; receiving, at a second time interval from a second sensor configured to output data indicative of a delta position of the eye, second data; determining, based on the first data, a first position of the eye; determining, based on the second data, a delta position of the eye; determining, using the first position of the eye and the delta position of the eye, a second absolute position of the eye; and in response to determining the second position of the eye, generating an output signal indicative of the second position of the eye.

Multimodal eye tracking

Examples of a light field metrology system for use with a display are disclosed. The light field metrology may capture images of a projected light field, and determine focus depths (or lateral focus positions) for various regions of the light field using the captured images. The determined focus depths (or lateral positions) may then be compared with intended focus depths (or lateral positions), to quantify the imperfections of the display. Based on the measured imperfections, an appropriate error correction may be performed on the light field to correct for the measured imperfections. The display can be an optical display element in a head mounted display, for example, an optical display element capable of generating multiple depth planes or a light field display.

Dynamic display calibration based on eye-tracking

A virtual image generation system for use by an end user comprises a projection subsystem configured for generating a collimated light beam, and a display configured emitting light rays in response to the collimated light beam to display a pixel of an image frame to the end user. The pixel has a location encoded with angles of the emitted light rays. The virtual image generation system further comprises a sensing assembly configured for sensing at least one parameter indicative of at least one of the emitted light ray angles, and a control subsystem configured for generating image data defining a location of the pixel, and controlling an angle of the light beam relative to the display based on the defined location of the pixel and the sensed parameter(s).

A display subsystem for a virtual image generation system for use by an end user comprises a display, an optical fiber having a polarization-maintaining (PM) transmission fiber section and a non-PM scanning fiber section, a light source configured for injecting a linearly polarized light beam into the transmission fiber section, such that the linearly polarized light beam is emitted from the scanning fiber section, a mechanical scanning drive assembly in which the scanning fiber section is affixed, wherein the mechanical scanning drive assembly is configured for displacing the scanning optical fiber section is order to scan the emitted light beam, and a display configured for receiving the scanned light beam and generating an image to the end user.

Polarizing maintaining optical fiber in virtual/augmented reality system

A stacked waveguide assembly can have multiple waveguide stacks. Each waveguide stack can include a plurality of waveguides, where a first waveguide stack may be associated with a first subcolor of each of three different colors, and a second waveguide stack may be associated with a second subcolor of each of the three different colors. For example, the first stack of waveguides can incouple blue, green, and red light at 440 nm, 520 nm, and 650 nm, respectively. The second stack of waveguides can incouple blue, green, and red light at 450 nm, 530 nm, and 660 nm, respectively.

Wavelength multiplexing in waveguides

In a stacked waveguide assembly, the waveguides can comprise color filters, distributed filters, and/or switch materials. Examples of color filters include dyes, tints, or stains. Examples of distributed filters and/or switch materials include dichroic filters, Bragg gratings, electronically switchable glass, and electronically switchable mirrors. Switch materials can be designed or tuned to attenuate light of unwanted colors or wavelengths. The waveguides may each be associated with a particular design wavelength. This can mean that a waveguide that is associated with a design wavelength includes an incoupling optical element is configured to deflect light at the design wavelength to an associated light distributing element and that the associated wavelength selective region is configured to attenuate light not at the design wavelength.

Distributed light manipulation over imaging waveguide

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to continuous and/or binocular time warping methods to account for head movement of the user without having to re-render a displayed image. Continuous time warping allows for transformation of an image from a first perspective to a second perspective of the viewer without having to re-render the image from the second perspective. Binocular time warp refers to the late-frame time warp used in connection with a display device including a left display unit for the left eye and a right display unit for the right eye where the late-frame time warp is performed separately for the left display unit and the right display unit. Warped images are sent to the left and the right display units where photons are generated and emitted toward respective eyes of the viewer, thereby displaying an image on the left and the right display units at the same time.
