In various embodiments, the techniques and supporting systems implement a recursive routing mechanism in hierarchical topological addressed environments to analyze and determine the presence of packet-forwarding errors within an IP network comprising a plurality of network-connected devices. This includes receiving, at a software defined network device, an indication of a potential packet-forwarding error between a first and second device of the plurality of network-connected devices and injecting, by the software defined network device, a test packet at an ingress to the first device. The test packet includes an initial ingress interface location identifying the first device, an alternate ingress interface location identifying the software defined network device and an egress interface location identifying the second device. A determination may then be made as to whether the test packet is received at the second device, thus indicating the existence or lack of routing errors.

Troubleshooting multi-layered networks using datapath analysis

A system for hierarchical topological addressing and hierarchical recursive routing in a network includes routing devices organized in a hierarchical topology forming a routing layer including levels. The levels include first and second levels including first and second subsets of the routing devices, respectively. Each routing device in the first level is directly connected to endpoint modules and to routing devices in the second level. Each routing device has a hierarchical address based on a location of the routing device within the hierarchical topology. Each routing device performs recursive one-hop routing to route packets through the network. Performing recursive one-hop routing on a particular packet includes: selecting a network port based on a destination address of the packet, wherein the destination address is a hierarchical address of a second routing device in the first level, and forwarding the packet to a routing device directly connected to the selected network port.

In one example, a network device includes computer-readable storage media configured to store information defining a default dictionary associated with one or more default services provided by the network service, one or more interfaces configured to receive configuration data defining a customer dictionary associated with one or more additional services beyond the one or more default services and a to receive a request to access one of the additional services from a subscriber device, and a control unit configured to determine whether an authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) server grants access to the requested one of the additional services to the subscriber device, and to configure forwarding information of the network device to cause network traffic associated with the subscriber device to be forwarded to a service unit to perform the one of the additional services when the AAA server grants access to the subscriber device based on the determination.

Customer extendable AAA framework for network elements

In one aspect, a communication system allows telephone users to roam between cellular and broadband domains and obtain equivalent level of service and features in the broadband network as in the cellular network. For example, such users can make use of Push-To Talk service, as well as continuous telephone call service, independent of which domain they are connected through. In another aspect, users can pass messages, including voice messages, or establish two-way voice communication between disparate push-to-talk (PTT) or messaging and/or voice systems. For example, a user on a cellular network using a PTT service is able to communicate with a user on a data network using an IM service. In addition, information is passed between the systems to provide coordinated presence information for users. For example, a user can have presence information in multiple networks enabling users form different networks to communication with that user.

Inter-system communication

Application layer authentication of a data-network based application makes use of a SIM function accessible to the application and telephone network authentication service accessible to a server to the application. For example, the application uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for communication with the server and the authentication service is provided via a GSM based telephone network. In one implementation, a device (a 'dongle') includes an authentication module, application software, and an interface for communicating with a remote server over a data communication network. The application software includes instructions for using the authentication module to authorize an application layer interaction with the remote server.

Network based authentication

A telephone system supports communication with user devices over both a cellular radio network as well as over an Internet Protocol (IP) network, and enables roaming and active call handoff between cellular and IP domains. Approaches to detecting presence of a user near a suitable IP network are used in controlling transitions between the domains, for example, enabling automatic transitions between domains, and delivery of calls to a mobile user to data network devices in the vicinity of the user.
