The present disclosure is related to virtual spaces, such as channels, of a communication platform. In some cases, a channel may be designated as a private channel, which may permit access to the private channel by only users joined to the channel and may restrict/prevent access by all other users. The present disclosure is related to solutions for changing the private channel to a public channel, which may allow additional user accounts that were not associated with the private channel to discover and/or access the converted channel.

Converting private channels to public channels

Modifying direct message (DM) communication membership is described. A communication platform can receive, in association with a DM communication and from a user computing device of a user of a first group of users, a first request to modify the first group of users. The communication platform can send a second request to designate whether to include context data associated with the DM communication in a new or existing DM communication. Based on receiving an indication to include at least a portion of the context data associated with the DM communication in the new or existing DM communication, the communication platform can generate the new DM communication, wherein the new DM communication is associated with a second group of users different than the first group of users, and at least the portion of the context data is associated with the new DM communication.

The present disclosure is directed toward systems and methods for ranking media effects. For example, systems and methods described herein enable a user to select and apply one or more media effects to a media communication such as a digital photograph or video. Systems and methods described herein identify and rank media effects based on characteristics associated with the user and the user's client-computing device. Furthermore, systems and methods described herein automatically present the top-ranked media effects to the user such that the user can easily select and apply one or more media effects that are tailored specifically to the user.
