A wireless transceiver is provided for transmitting and receiving audio data, comprising: a microphone configured to generate a digital audio signal that includes the audio data, based on a received sound sampled into digital format; a voice detection circuit configured to detect the presence of voice activity in the audio data, and to generate a voice detection signal indicating whether the voice activity is present in the audio data; a transceiver circuit configured to transmit the audio data over a wireless medium; and a control circuit configured to control transmission of the audio data over the wireless medium by the transceiver circuit, based on the voice detection signal. This allows saving of transmission power since no transmission is done during the silence periods. The digital audio signal is at least one of a pulse code modulated signal without compression, and a Bluetooth signal.

System and method for reducing power consumption in a wireless device

A novel and useful range extension and in-band noise mitigation mechanism that uses conventional CRC error detection codes to correct single and multiple bit errors in packets received over a communications link. The CRC error correction mechanism of the invention is particularly suitable for use with communication protocols with weak error correction capabilities. The mechanism uses the linearity property of the CRC calculation to detect the existence of errors in the received packet. The entire received packet is searched for single bit errors and are corrected in a single cycle. If no single bit errors are found, the mechanism then searches for multiple bit errors. Packet retransmissions are used to detect and mark the location of multiple bit errors. Multiple bit errors are corrected by trying a plurality of hypotheses of single bit error corrections. Each hypotheses pattern is investigated to find matching CRC patterns for correction using the single bit, single cycle CRC error correction method.

Range extension and noise mitigation for wireless communication links utilizing a CRC based single and multiple bit error correction mechanism

A novel and useful mechanism for reducing the required backoff and the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) needed for an OFDM transmitter whiles still meeting spectral mask and EVM specifications. The mechanism searches, for each packet to be transmitted, for several possible scrambler and encryption sequences that would yield the best spectral mask and EVM with lowest PAPR. The search can be performed using the existing transmitter and receiver PHY circuit chain to modulate and demodulate the candidate hypotheses. Once the scrambler sequence and/or encryption sequence is selected, the packet is transmitted using the selected scrambler and encryption sequences. In addition, the invention exploits the fact that even for very low backoff margins, a reduced number of candidate hypotheses may be tested while still yielding a high probability of meet the spectral mask and EVM specifications.

Apparatus for and method of minimizing backoff for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmission

A novel and useful self-calibration based production line testing mechanism utilizing built-in closed loop measurements in the radio to calibrate the output power of an external power amplifier coupled to a SoC radio. The mechanism is applicable during production line testing and calibration which is performed on each SoC and associated external power amplifier after assembly at the target PCB of the final product. The mechanism calibrates the TX output power in three phases based on loopback EVM measurements. In a first phase, the PPA in the radio (SoC) is calibrated and gain versus output power is stored in a gain table in on-chip NVS. In a second phase, the maximum PPA TX power is determined using closed loop EVM measurements. The external PA is calibrated in a third phase and the maximum PA power is determined. During this third phase, the maximum power of the device is calculated, compared to the requirements of the particular standard and a pass/fail determination is thereby made.

A novel and useful apparatus for and method of providing a mechanism for achieving coexistence between a Bluetooth system and WLAN system collocated in the same communications device such as a mobile terminal. The coexistence mechanism of the present invention functions to monitor WLAN and Bluetooth system activity, determine the access priority of both WLAN and Bluetooth systems, predict Bluetooth high priority packet transmission patterns, allocate bandwidth to both the Bluetooth and WLAN systems in accordance with the traffic patterns predicted, and switch the antenna and control the Bluetooth and WLAN power amplifiers when required.

A novel and useful mechanism for regulating and managing the peak current consumption of the subsystems in a mobile handset device. The mechanism of the present invention is operative to limit the current consumption at any point in time to a predetermined level that is within the current handling capability of the power management system of the handheld device. The mechanism operates by having the high peak current subsystems advertise in advance their intention to initiate a current peak. An arbitration mechanism considers the advertisements or requests sent from interested subsystems and determines whether a subsystem is either granted permission to initiate or is blocked from initiating a peak current session.

A novel and useful apparatus for and method of Bluetooth and WiMAX coexistence. The invention provides a system approach to achieving coexistence between Bluetooth and WiMAX transceivers collocated in a mobile terminal. The coexistence mechanism of the present invention is particularly suited to operation of WiMAX in the 2.3 GHz and 2.5 GHz frequency bands. In operation, the coexistence mechanism of the present invention utilizes multiple algorithms depending on the capabilities of the Bluetooth peer and the power save support level of the WiMAX base station. In the example embodiment presented herein, the coexistence mechanism is implemented in the MAC layer of the Bluetooth and WiMAX radio modules.

Apparatus for and method of Bluetooth and WiMAX coexistence in a mobile handset

A novel and useful mechanism for automatically establishing a radio link between a communications device and a commercially available FM radio receiver, thereby eliminating the need to manually configure both the target FM radio receiver and the FM transmitter to a suitable FM station. The mechanism scans the RF spectrum periodically for candidate frequencies over which to transmit the desired audio signal to the target radio. Once a suitable frequency is detected, the mechanism waits for an incoming call in the case of a cellular phone or immediately establishes a link such as in the case of a multimedia player. When a connection is to be established, a Radio Data System compatible bitstream is transmitted to configure the target radio to jump to an 'alternate frequency' when reception conditions are poor enough. To ensure that the target radio receiver jumps to the desired station, the FM transmitter sends a CW signal to jam or block the station the target radio is currently tuned to. This causes the target radio to jump to the alternate frequency.

Apparatus for and method of automatic radio link establishment

A novel and useful synchronization mechanism that functions to provide a uniform time base for mesh points in a WLAN mesh based network. The invention enables timing synchronization to a common reference clock base by advertising the common TSF within beacon transmissions. All MPs in a mesh share a common DTIM interval. The synchronization mechanism enables the mesh points to avoid collisions in the generation and transmission of beacons. The TBTT offsets of the current MP and its neighbors are advertised in beacons so that neighboring MPs that hear the beacons can select non-overlapping TBTT offsets. Each MP receives one or more beacons from its neighbors and compares the timing of its neighbors to that of itself and adopts the highest TSF (i.e. the fastest) in the mesh. Eventually, all MPs in the mesh will adjust their timing to that of the MP with the fastest clock. The reception of beacons by MPs from its neighbors is also advertised. This allows for MPs to verify that the beacons they send are actually heard and are not in collision with beacon transmissions of other MPs.

Apparatus for and method of synchronization and beaconing in a WLAN mesh network

A system and method for wireless local area network throughput enhancement includes an access point and an endpoint station in a wireless computer network transmitting data packets over radio frequency signals, and reordering the data packets into a megapacket in the access point using concatenation of the data packets.
