Polymer containing a modified cyclic monomer unit

Disclosed is a polymer containing a cyclic olefin monomer unit, comprising a main chain represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein A to F are monomer units constituting the main chain in which A to F are arranged in any order, and a to f are, respectively, weight percentages of A to F, based on the total weight of A to F; A to F are selected from cyclic olefin monomer units, cyclic conjugated diene monomer units, chain conjugated diene monomer units, vinyl aromatic monomer units, polar monomer units, and an ethylene monomer unit and .alpha.-olefin monomer units, respectively; and a to f satisfy the following requirements: 0.001.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.100, and 0.ltoreq.b, c, d, e, f.ltoreq.100, with the proviso that monomer unit A is present in an amount of from 0.1 to 100 mole %, based on the total number of moles of the monomer units A and B, wherein when a=100, depending on whether the A monomer units are comprised of same or different cyclic olefin monomer units, the polymer has a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 10,000 to 5,000,000 or from 1,000 to 5,000,000, and wherein when 0.001.ltoreq.a+b&lt;100, the polymer has an Mn of from 500 to 5,000,000. This polymer has excellent thermal and mechanical properties. The polymer can be advantageously produced by a method in which a cyclic conjugated diene polymer is synthesized, preferably using a specific polymerization catalyst, and the obtained polymer is subjected to an addition reaction to thereby convert a cyclic conjugated diene monomer unit to a cyclic olefin monomer unit.

Polymer containing a cyclic olefin monomer unit

Disclosed is a cyclic conjugated diene polymer comprising a main chain represented by the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein A to E are monomer units constituting the main chain in which A to E are arranged in any order, and l to p are, respectively, weight percentages of A to E, based on the total weight of A to E; A is selected from cyclic conjugated diene monomer units, B is selected from chain conjugated diene monomer units, C is selected from vinyl aromatic monomer units, D is selected from polar monomer units, and E is selected from an ethylene monomer unit and .alpha.-olefin monomer units; and l to p satisfy the following requirements: 0.5.ltoreq.l.ltoreq.100, 0.ltoreq.m, n, o, p&lt;100, wherein when l=100 and the A monomer units are comprised of monomer units which are the same, the polymer has a number average molecular weight Mn of from 40,000 to 5,000,000, wherein when l=100 and the A monomer units are comprised of monomer units which are different, the polymer has an Mn of from 25,000 to 5,000,000, and wherein when 0.5.ltoreq.l&lt;100, the polymer has an Mn of from 500 to 5,000,000. The cyclic conjugated diene polymer has excellent thermal and mechanical properties. The polymer can be advantageously produced using a catalyst comprised of a complex of an organometallic compound containing a Group IA metal with a complexing agent, especially an amine.
