Disclosed is a routing algorithm that uses a new concept of node metric system for optimizing the throughput of a network, in particular, a shared medium network. The measure of congestion of a path in the network is represented by a path metric which is computed by summing the node metrics of the intermediate nodes on the path. Factors used in computing node metrics include the following: 1. future traffic load from neighboring nodes to the node; and 2. future traffic load from the node to the neighboring nodes.

Multi-path dynamic routing algorithm

Methods and systems for a wireless ATM network with high quality of service scheduling are provided. In one embodiment, a wireless ATM network with per-VC scheduling, a virtual framer for periodical, request-less scheduling, and a virtual shaper for request-based scheduling are provided.

A method for processing grants in a packet switched network includes the steps of generating a request-less grant for a particular virtual circuit of a subscriber terminal and sending the grant to that virtual circuit of the subscriber terminal.

Grant processing in wireless ATM networks

A method of multiplexing multiple terminals in a distributed network includes transporting user traffic and telephony signaling information. Transporting user traffic includes converting the user traffic into ATM cells, passing the ATM cells over a wireless link to a TDM port in an ATM multiplexer wherein the ATM multiplexer includes an ATM circuit emulation service, and converting the ATM cells into user traffic. Transporting telephony signaling information includes extracting the telephony signaling information from a user interface, passing the telephony signaling information to a base station using an ATM virtual circuit, processing and aggregating a number of telephony signaling information into a single channel, and transmitting the single channel to the ATM multiplexer.

Multiplexing terminals in a distributed network

In a wireless mesh topology data communications network, a communications method having a type of handshaking protocol for data exchange. A portion of the protocol is synchronous, using a schedule of control channel sessions held at all mutually communicating nodes of the network and a portion of the protocol is asynchronous, relying upon gaps between control channel sessions for transmission of requested data. Nodes which are in line of sight relation request data from each other using a request to send message and a clear to send message. A requesting node sends an RTS message to a neighbor node with information about gaps specifying the location of requested data. A supplying node transmits a potential schedule for sending requested information and the requesting node sends a CTS message agreeing upon the schedule. The potential schedule includes a number of available gaps between known control channel sessions. Because transmissions are scheduled, rapidly switchable directional antennas at requesting and supplying nodes may be used with good advantage.
