An internal combustion engine has a particle filter in an exhaust gas line for filtering solid particles contained in the exhaust gas, and includes a supplementary burner to which the solid particles are supplied from the filter and in which the particles are burned. The combustion gases from the supplementary burner are introduced into the air intake line for the engine, permitting a reduction in solid particles emitted into the environment when the NO.sub.x. content of the exhaust gases is reduced.

In the typical embodiment described in the specification, the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine has two exhaust lines with corresponding catalyst assemblies, each assigned to one group of combustion chambers. A method and device for adjusting the timing of an internal combustion engine in response to knocking are provided. In the method, knocking signals are generated when the engine knocks and the timing is too far advanced. First correctional signals are generated in response to the knocking signals and adjust at one speed range one of several control curves. Second correctional signals are generated from the first correctional signals to adjust the control curves at the remaining speed ranges. The timing of the engine is retarded in response to the adjusted control curves until the knocking disappears. The air ratio is in a range wherein an increased air ratio corresponds to decreased mean indicated pressure and consequently decreased torque. The timing advance has the same ratio to engine speed change as the ratio of nominal ignition pulse spacing to the desired engine idle speed.

A method for operating an internal combustion engine under varying load conditions includes different controls which are used in first, second and third load ranges of the engine. In the first, lowest load range, including idle operation, a constant lean fuel-air ratio and constant mixture volume are supplied to the engine while the ignition timing is varied to provide a more advanced timing with increased engine load. In the second, intermediate load range, the lean fuel-air ratio is again maintained constant, the ignition timing corresponding to the most advanced ignition timing of the first range is maintained constant, and the mixture volume is varied from the volume corresponding to the first range to a higher volume with increased engine load. In the third, highest range of engine load, the mixture volume is maintained constant, the ignition timing is varied only as required to prevent knocking of the engine, and the fuel-air ratio is varied to supply a richer mixture with increased engine load. In one embodiment of the invention, the fuel-air ratio and ignition timing are controlled by the use of an electronic control circuit which responds to signals representative of a control lever position and the engine speed. The mixture volume is controlled by a conventional throttle flap which is linked in a special manner to the control lever.

A device is provided for controlling the flow of the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine in accordance with the operating conditions of the engine. Exhaust gases flowing from the exhaust manifold are routed either directly to the muffler or to a heat exchanger for preheating the intake air/fuel mixture. The device includes an aeromechanical element having a nozzle-like constriction opening into an enlarged passage. A pair of outlets, connected to the muffler and heat exchanger, branch off from the passage following the constriction. The flow of gases is selectively directed through one of the two outlets by means of control line connections in the enlarged passage, which are supplied with either pressure, negative pressure, or both as the means for deflecting the flow.

A device is provided for controlling the flow of exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine in accordance with the operating conditions of the engine. Exhaust gases flowing from the exhaust manifold are routed either directly to the muffler or to a heat exchanger for heating the intake air/fuel mixture. The device includes a housing having ceramic valve which is rotatable in the housing and which has two parallel gas passages separated by a web-like wall. In a first rotational position of the valve, the flow of gases is directed from the manifold through both passages and directly out to the muffler. When the valve is in a second rotational position, the flow of gases is directed through one of the two passages and into the heat exchanger. From the heat exchanger, the flow is directed back through a return line into the second passage of the valve and thereafter to the muffler.
