A method for use in connection with a data transmission network includes receiving a plurality of time interval error data samples over a sampling period and comparing a duration of the sampling period to a time threshold for the sampling period. If the duration of the sampling period is less than or equal to the time threshold for the sampling period, the method includes processing the received plurality of data samples so as to calculate in real time a maximum time interval error. However, if the duration of the sampling period exceeds the time threshold for the sampling period, the method includes dividing the sampling period into a finite number of sub-intervals and processing the data samples in each sub-interval so as to produce a respective intermediate result for each sub-interval. Each of these intermediate results is stored directly after it is produced, and these stored intermediate results are processed so as to estimate the maximum time interval error.

Method and apparatus for estimating a maximum time interval error in a data transmission network

An innovative system and method for achieving high precision clock recovery, i.e. reconstruction of the clock signal having the same frequency, over a packet switched network. The proposed method utilizes a minimum network delay approach, which overcomes the problems caused by delay variation of the network and filters out network jitter, such as noise jitter and other 'singular' anomalies causing latency deviations. Minimum network delay is defined herein as the time delay in which a packet remains in the network under assumption that all transmission queues through which the packet passes are empty.

System and method for high precision clock recovery over packet networks

Streams of data including explicit synchronization patterns (such as entire T1/E1) are transmitted utilizing an unstructured data format, while streams not containing explicit synchronization patterns (such as fractional T1/E1) are sent utilizing a structured data format, i.e., the data structure itself provides for circuit alignment at the receiving end. In addition, SDH VC-12 frames are transmitted over the IP network by encapsulating the entire frame (payload and overhead) into an RTP packet. Furthermore, the clock is reconstructed (clock recovery) from the packet stream at the receiver's side.
