A device is presented comprising a multi-layer structure with a plurality of metal islands on the surface of a solid transparent substrate. The islands are coated by an ultrathin sol-gel derived silica film via self-assembled monolayer.

Device and method for optical localized plasmon sensing

A method is presented for use in fabrication of metal islands on an oxide substrate. The method comprises: depositing a selected metal on the oxide substrate by evaporation of said selected metal; and annealing a film of the selected metal on said substrate at temperatures including an annealing temperature being less than 50&#xb0; C. lower than a glass transition temperature, thereby forming the metal islands partially embedded in said substrate.

Method for fabrication of localized plasmon transducers

This invention seeks to provide methods and apparatus for analysis. Electromagnetic radiation is transmitted through a plurality of metallic islands on a transparent substrate. A resultant optical property of the plurality of metallic islands is measured. Thereafter a chemical substance is adsorbed onto the plurality of metallic islands so as to produce a chemical substance-metallic islands moiety. Electromagnetic radiation is transmitted through the chemical substance-metallic islands moiety and a resultant optical property of metallic islands in the chemical substance-metallic islands moiety is measured. The resultant optical property of the metallic islands in chemical substance-metallic islands moiety and the resultant optical property of the plurality of metallic islands are employed so as to provide at least one of a quantitative indication and a qualitative indication of at least one of: the chemical substance-metallic islands moiety, a functionality of the chemical substance-metallic islands moiety, the plurality of metallic islands, a functionality of the plurality of metallic islands, the chemical substance and a functionality of the chemical substance.

Method and apparatus for detecting and quantifying a chemical substance employing an optical transmission property of metallic islands on a transparent substrate

A method of examining a sample, including: performing a first spectroscopic analysis of a surface portion of the sample when the sample surface portion is in a first electrical charge state; placing the sample surface portion in a second electrical charge state that is different from the first electrical charge state and performing a second spectroscopic analysis of the surface portion of the sample when the sample surface portion is in the second electrical charge state; and comparing the first spectroscopic analysis result with the second spectroscopic analysis result to obtain at least one of structural and electrical information about the sample.

Electron spectroscopy employing controlled surface charging

According to the invention organic monolayer films are applied to an electrically conductive substrate, resulting in an electrode which can be used in electrochemical processes. The said film serves as ultrathin membrane and allows certain selected species to approach the substrate and be detected. The film comprises active species which are selective towards specific species contained in mixture with others and a blocking surface sealing component. It is also possible to use one compound serving both purposes. The components of the film are attached to the substrate by a variety of means: adsorption, chemisorption, electro-chemical deposition.
