Novel Intermediates ##STR1## wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon residue or acyl group; X is an electron withdrawing group; Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2, which are the same or different, are each independently oxygen or sulfur; and A is a substituted or unsubstituted, divalent hydrocarbon residue have potent reactivity, this being useful in preparing guanidine derivatives.

An insecticidal composition containing a guanidine derivative of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an optionally substituted homocyclic or heterocyclic group, n is 0 or 1, R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, R.sup.3 is a primary, secondary or tertiary amino group, X is an electron attractive group such as nitro or trifluoroacetyl group, provided that when n is 0, R.sup.1 is an optionally substituted heterocyclic group or a salt thereof.

Safe and quite active termiticidal compositions for controlling termites comprising an effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, a C.sub.1-6 alkyl-carbonyl group, or C.sub.1-6 alkoxy-carbonyl group; or a salt thereof and an an agrochemically acceptable vehicle, are provided. Methods for eradicating termites are also provided. The termiticidal composition exhibits an excellent activity in eradicating termites.

Novel processes for preparing 2-chlorothiazoles, useful as an intermediate for insecticides, from allyl isothiocyanate derivatives having the formula [II]: ##STR1## wherein X represents a leaving group, are simple and convenient reaction procedures under mild conditions without need of a large excess of a chlorinating agent. Further, processes for preparing 5-(aminomethyl)-2-chlorothiazole or salts thereof from the compound [II] achieve higher yields by simple, convenient and inexpensive procedures.
