A process for neutralization is provided which can maintain a high solid content of a bauxite dissolution residual substance slurry even after a neutralization treatment is completed and the stabilize pH within a short time of the neutralization treatment. Such a process for neutralizing a bauxite dissolution residual substance containing a desiliconizing product which is generated in the production process of aluminum hydroxide using Bayer process, includes: mixing a bauxite dissolution residual substance or a bauxite dissolution residual substance slurry with sulfuric acid in an amount ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 equivalence to the total amount of sodium contained in the bauxite dissolution residual substance or a bauxite dissolution residual substance slurry, such that the solid content after mixing becomes 400 to 700 g/l to gelate the mixture, and thereafter obtaining a bauxite dissolution residual substance neutralized slurry.

A process in which alumina is extracted from bauxite with an aqueous alkali solution, and a desilication product is precipitated such that the product is not contained in a bauxite residue and does not form a complex. The desilication product is mixed with a calcium compound, and the mixture is calcined, to thereby solubilize and recover an alkali component of the product. In addition, an alkali component is removed from a residue (a solid product), and the residue is effectively used as a resource.

A probe for an ultrasonic microscope is disclosed. The probe has an element for radiating and receiving an ultrasonic wave and an acoustic lens for causing an ultrasonic wave, which has been generated by the element, to converge at a point into an ultrasonic beam, whereby the ultrasonic beam is radiated against a sample and a reflected wave of the thus-radiated ultrasonic beam is received by the element to convert the reflected wave into an electrical signal proportional to the reflected wave. A mask is provided on a side of the sample relative to the acoustic lens. The mask is composed of an ultrasonic wave transmitting portion and an ultrasonic wave blocking portion. The transmitting portion permits the transmission of first beam components, which take part in producing an elastic surface wave in one direction in a surface layer of the sample, and second beam components which take no part in the production of any elastic surface wave. The blocking portion substantially reduces the transmission of third beam components, which take part in producing elastic surface waves in directions other than said one direction in the surface layer of the sample.

A method for examining a layer having defects and in particular the thickness of a machining damaged layer on a surface of a sample by means of a focused ultrasound beam and a device for realizing the method are disclosed, in which a focused ultrasound beam is generated and ultrasound reflected by the sample is detected. Curves (called V(z) curves) representing the relation of the distance between a transducer detecting the reflected ultrasound and the sample versus the detection output are traced while varying the distance and this measurement is repeated while varying the frequency of the focused ultrasound beam. The propagation velocity of surface acoustic wave in the sample is calculated on the basis of the period in each of the plurality of V(z) curves and a frequency dependence characteristic curve for the propagation velocity is obtained. The thickness of the machining damaged layer in the surface portion of the sample is evaluated from inflection points in the frequency dependence characteristic curve.

This invention relates to an apparatus for two-dimensional electrophoresis which comprises a supporting plate fixed to a rotary axis, a support for first dimension electrophoresis disposed on the supporting plate and a support for second dimension electrophoresis disposed on another supporting plate. Both the supports are arranged in such a fashion that when the rotary axis is rotated, the support for the first dimension electrophoresis comes on the support for the second dimension electrophoresis or reaches a predetermined position in the support for the second dimension electrophoresis. This arrangement can shift the support for the first dimension electrophoresis to the support for the second dimension electrophoresis without damaging the former.

An acoustic microscope wherein an ultrasonic beam is projected on a sample through a propagating medium by an ultrasonic transducer having a short focus, reflected acoustic waves from the sample are detected by the transducer, and a microscopic image of the sample is obtained by scanning the sample mechanically in two dimensions, comprises a cover member which is interposed between the sample and the propagating medium and which has an acoustic impedance higher than those of the two. The intensity of a reflection signal depends upon multipath reflection within the cover member, and an intense reflection signal is obtained even for a sample which differs slightly in the acoustic impedance from the propagating medium.

Scanning acoustic microscope

An acoustic microscope of the type of mechanical scanning in which a single transducer works to generate an acoustic beam as well as to detect echoes reflected from the specimen. An echo reflected from an interface between an acoustic lens and an acoustic propagation medium is detected, and the detected intensity is used as a reference to display the distribution of attenuation factors of the specimen in a two-dimensional manner. Among the signals representing the distribution of attenuation factors of the specimen, furthermore, only those signals having intensities that lie within a predetermined range are displayed to obtain a picture of the specimen that represents the distribution of attenuation factors of a predetermined range only.
