The improved electrically regenerable demineralizing apparatus uses ion exchangers that are produced by radiation-initiated graft polymerization and that are packed in the demineralizing compartment of an electrodialyzer. The apparatus may use a mosaic ion exchanger that consists of alternately arranged cation- and anion-exchange groups. Alternately, the apparatus may have an immobilized amino acid packed in the demineralizing compartment of an electrodialyzer. The apparatus maintains consistent water quality for a prolonged time, is capable of treating from small to large volumes of water and yet is easy to service and manage.

The improved battery for reversible operation at ambient temperature comprises a negative electrode, a composite positive electrode which is composed of an ion-conductive high-molecular weight compound that has at least one ionic compound dissolved therein and that has a polyether structure and ion conductivity, an electrochemically active material and, optionally, an electron conductive material, and an electrolyte which is made of an ion-conductive high-molecular weight compound that has at least one ionic compound dissolved therein and that has a polyether structure and ion conductivity. The improvement is such that said composite positive electrode and said electrolyte are formed by exposure to an active radiation such as ultraviolet rays or ionizing radiation. Thanks to the improvement in electrolyte and positive electrode, the battery can be fabricated with great ease, is entirely free from the possibility of electrolyte leakage and has high long-term reliability and safety.

A process for forming a container of acrylonitrile polymers by biaxial-orientation blow-molding a preform. A preform of thermoplastic resin, mainly acrylonitrile polymers, is irradiated with an electron beam or a gamma-ray. Immediately after the irradiation, the preform is heated at 40.degree. C. or higher to reduce residual acrylonitrile monomer in the preform to 0.1 ppm or less. Then, the preform is biaxial-orientation blow molded to form a container.

There is described a solid polymer electrolyte containing an ionic salt in a three-dimensional crosslinked compound of a poly(vinylalkyl ether) represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## (where R is CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5 or CH(CH.sub.3)(C.sub.2 H.sub.5); and n is an integer of 100-2,000). The poly(vinylalkyl ether) is preferably poly(vinylmethyl ether) and crosslinked by exposure to an ionizing radiation. The solid polymer electrolyte also contains a compound that is capable of solubilizing the ionic salt.

A separator membrane for use in secondary alkali batteries having a non-ion selective hydrophilic group and ion exchange group said membrane having an electrical resistance which, when said membrane is heated in 12NaOH for 30 minutes at a temperature between about 20.degree. and 100.degree. A method of producing an ion exchange membrane comprising irradiating a polyethylene film not more than 150 .mu.m thick with ionizing radiation for a total dose of 1-30 Mrads in vacuum or in an inert gas, bringing the irradiated film into contact with a 15 to 50 wt % aqueous solution of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid at 15.degree. to 50.degree. C. to have acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid graft copolymerized onto polyethylene, followed by treatment of the graft copolymer with a 2 to 10 wt % aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide.

Novel method of producing ion exchange membrane

A novel process for the production of a separator for use in a cell to prevent the short-circuiting of positive active material and negative active material comprises irradiating a polyolefin film 150 .mu.m or less thick with ionizing radiation at a dose rate of 5.times.10.sup.4 -10.sup.7 rads/sec. to give a total dose of 1 Mrad or more, contacting the irradiated film with an aqueous solution of a terminally unsaturated monomer such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and the like at a temperature of 10.degree. C.-60.degree. C. to thereby cause grafting of the monomer onto the polyolefin film before the grafted polymer film is treated with an aqueous alkaline solution to finally obtain the separator for use in a cell, which is substantially improved in that it shows low electrical resistance and is excellent both in its acid resistance and mechanical strength.

Process for production of separators for use in cells

A water-soluble vinyl polymer is produced by polymerizing a water-soluble vinyl monomer in the presence of a catalyst or under the action of ultraviolet rays to prepare a polymer having a degree of polymerization of at least 95%, adjusting the water content of the system containing said polymer to be within the range of from 15 to 30%, and irradiating said system with ionizing radiation.
