A sheath for use with an endoscope having a flexible insertion tube to isolate at least a portion of the insertion tube from an external environment, and to alter the bending characteristics of at least a portion of the insertion tube, is shown and described. The sheath includes a compliant tube and an elongated shape-retaining member attached to the compliant tube. The compliant tube has a proximal end having an interior area configured to receive a first portion of the flexible insertion tube. The shape-retaining member extends axially along a second portion of the flexible insertion tube when the first portion of the flexible insertion tube is positioned in the interior area of the compliant tube. The shape-retaining member is sufficiently stiff to remain in a selected shape or position, and to retain the second portion of the flexible insertion tube in the selected shape or position. The shape-retaining member in one embodiment is rigid, and in another embodiment is sufficiently bendable to allow the operator to conform the insertion tube to other selected shapes or positions. In another alternate embodiment, the sheath has a rigid, shape-retaining member along a first portion of the sheath, a bendable shape-retaining member along a second portion of the sheath, and the compliant tube along a distal portion of the sheath.

Sheath for protecting and altering the bending characteristics of a flexible endoscope

A coupling cartridge and end cap for protecting an endoscope from contamination during use. The coupling cartridge provides fluid communication between a pair of external fluid conduits and respective channels formed in an endoscope insertion tube, and between a biopsy channel port projecting from the cartridge and an additional insertion tube channel. In one embodiment, fluid flow through the external fluid conduits is controlled by an external fluid control unit that is electrically controlled by respective switches mounted on the control handle of the endoscope. In another embodiment, fluid flow through the external fluid conduits is controlled by a valve mechanism in the coupling cartridge that is controlled by either an actuator on the cartridge or an actuator on the control handle that is mechanically coupled to the valve mechanism. The coupling cartridge may be removed from endoscope after an endoscopic procedure for disposal or rigorous cleaning. The end cap fits onto the distal end of the insertion tube to isolate it from external contamination. A viewing window, an illumination window, and a biopsy channel project from the distal end of the insertion tube and are received by respective apertures formed in the end cap. The projecting components are tightly surrounded by the end cap as they extend through their respective apertures thereby forming a fluid seal to prevent contamination from reaching the distal end of the insertion tube. A fluid nozzle may also be formed in the end cap to receive a washing fluid from a fluid port at the distal end of the insertion tube and direct the fluid onto the surface of the viewing window for cleaning. A protective sheath may be attached to the end cap and cover the insertion tube to also protect the outer surface of the insertion tube from contamination.

A viewing scope is described having a two-part ocular piece which assures that strain due to probe flexing does not build-up and cause breakage in a quartz silica or other similarly rigid fiberoptic image bundle. The ocular piece includes a holder which maintains the image end of the image bundle in a predetermined position with respect to the ocular parts necessary to focus the image, and a body portion to which the outer tubular cover of the probe is secured. The connection between the holder and body allows limited translational movement between the same so that differential longitudinal expansion between the image bundle and the remainder of the probe can be accommodated.
