The invention relates to steel which is characterized by the following composition as expressed in percentages by weight: &#x2014;C=0.18 0.30%, &#x2014;Co=5-7%, &#x2014;Cr=2-5%, &#x2014;Al=1-2%, &#x2014;Mo+W/2=1-4%, &#x2014;V=trace 0.3%, &#x2014;Nb=trace 0.1%, &#x2014;B=trace&#x2212;50 ppm, &#x2014;Ni=10.5-15% with Ni&#x2267;7+3.5 Al, &#x2014;Si=trace 0.4%, &#x2014;Mn=trace 0.4%, &#x2014;Ca=trace&#x2212;500 ppm, &#x2014;Rare earths=trace&#x2212;500 ppm, &#x2014;Ti=trace&#x2212;500 ppm, &#x2014;O=trace&#x2212;200 ppm if the steel is obtained by means of powder metallurgy or trace&#x2212;50 ppm if the steel is produced in air or under a vacuum from molten metal, &#x2014;N=trace&#x2212;100 ppm, &#x2014;S=trace&#x2212;50 ppm, &#x2014;Cu=trace&#x2212;1%, and &#x2014;P=trace&#x2212;200 ppm, the remainder including iron and the inevitable impurities resulting from production. A mechanical part presents a main direction along which there extends a central zone forming a core and a peripheral zone forming a casing that surrounds the core. The core and the casing present a metallurgical bond between each other. The core is made of a first material presenting at least a metal matrix, and the casing is made of a second material presenting at least a metal matrix. The metal matrices of the first and second materials are based on the same metal, and at least one of the first and second materials is made of a metal matrix composite containing reinforcing elements dispersed in the metal matrix. The mechanical part can be used as a blade for a fan or a low pressure compressor.

Reinforced composite mechanical component, and method for making same

A protection part comprising at least two layers including an outer layer and an inner layer has its outer layer made of an aluminum alloy that is reinforced with particles of SiC, the SiC particle content in said alloy lying in the range 15% to 40% by weight, while the inner layer is made of an aluminum alloy that is optionally reinforced with SiC particles, the SiC particle content within the layers increasing from the inner layer towards the outer layer. The part is for use in protecting the leading edge of a blade, in particular a blade or vane in a turbomachine, a helicopter blade, or a propeller blade.
