The previously described shortcomings are solved by a system and method herein that allows for the creation of scaleable wireless data packet networks notwithstanding capacity restrictions of routers used within the network. More specifically, a GGSN is formed to receive an address that is assigned to a different GGSN for support. Stated differently, a GGSN supports an address that is assigned to a different GGSN for support by being responsible for creating a PDP context for that address. Accordingly, because subnet addresses will be assigned to specific GGSNs in one embodiment of the described invention, each GGSN is formed to examine a received address, determine what GGSN is responsible for supporting that address and to forward the address to the responsible GGSN along with an initially requested APN and with vendor specific attributes. The GGSN to which the address is being forwarded is sent to the APN so that it will know the destination network with which the context activation is to be established. The vendor specific attributes are sent so that additional functionality such as billing may be properly performed and implemented. Accordingly, the modified GGSN supports the creation of scaleable networks because each GGSN is able to determine whether an address that it received from a remote DHCP server is one that it can support, and if not, what GGSN is able to support it. Thus, the networks may be grown and/or modified in a scaleable manner while minimizing impact to the existing network elements.

PDP context distribution among multiple GGSNs

In a wireless communications network, different service levels can be subscribed to by users of mobile stations for packet-switched communications, such as electronic mail, web browsing, text chat, packet-switched voice communications, and so forth. In one arrangement, two different levels are defined. For a first level, when there is no more data to send over a wireless interface between a mobile station and a wireless access system, a logical connection between the mobile station and wireless access system is released. However, at a second level, the logical connection between the mobile station and the wireless access system is not released until after a predetermined timed period from when a send buffer becomes empty, with the send buffer containing data for sending over the wireless interface. A benefit of releasing the logical connection after some predetermined wait period is that the delays associated with establishing another logical connection are reduced.

Method and apparatus for differentiated communications in a wireless network

A method and system for decoding tailbiting convolution codes are disclosed. A set of tailbiting convolutional codes is encoded by a convolutional encoder having multiple encoding states. A first starting score is assigned to each of the encoding states. A Viterbi algorithm is then performed once on the tailbiting convolutional code to associate an ending score with each of the encoding states. A subset of these encoding states is subsequently selected, within which the ending score of each encoding state meets a certain criterion. The Viterbi algorithm is again performed on the tailbiting convolutional code for each encoding state within the subset to determine the best encoding state as the most likely initial encoding state for the tailbiting convolutional code. A Trellis path of this most likely initial encoding state is utilized to decode the tailbiting convolutional code.
