A method is provided of a sensor sensing a mobile user terminal for cellular radio telecommunications, the user terminal being associated with any one of a plurality of networks, each network having a distinct carrier frequency band for radio signals. The method comprises: broadcasting a common signal at each of multiple carrier frequency bands; the user terminal receiving the signal in the associated carrier frequency band of its network; the user terminal checking information in the received signal, and upon determining that the information is acceptable to allow connection to the sensor, the user terminal acknowledging to the sensor its receipt of the signal.

A femto cell device comprises: a receiver for receiving transmissions from a user terminal in an active call with a macro cellular network node; an analyzer for determining a radio frequency (RF) signature characterizing the transmissions received from the user terminal; an authorizer arranged to use the RF signature to determine if the user terminal is authorized to use the femto cell device; and a communicator for informing the core network that the femto cell device is a valid candidate handover target for the user terminal when the user terminal is determined by the authorizer to be authorized to use the femto cell device.

A wireless communication technique provides mobility for a mobile station to communicate with an overlay network device, which is within a coverage area of an underlay network device, when the mobile station is within a coverage area of both devices. The overlay network device broadcasts at least two downlink channels. A cell code (e.g., a scrambling code or pseudo noise offset) of a first one of the downlink channels identifies an overlay network device exclusively. The mobile station can detect the first downlink channel responsive to an indication of the exclusive cell code from the underlay network device. A second one of the downlink channels allows for subsequent, ongoing communications between the mobile station and the overlay network device.

A method is provided of identifying a handover target femtocell base station from among multiple femtocell base stations. The method comprises: (a) measuring the characteristic of the handover target femtocell base station to provide a first measured value of the characteristic; (b) then identifying as handover candidate femtocell base stations a first set of femtocell base stations all having that first characteristic value; (c) then changing the characteristic of selected femtocell base stations in the first set; (d) then measuring the characteristic of the handover target femtocell base station to provide a further measured value of the characteristic; (e) then identifying as a reduced set of handover candidate femtocell base stations each femtocell base station in the first set having the further measured value of the characteristic; (f) then checking whether the number of femtocell base stations in the reduced set of handover candidate femtocell base stations is one, and upon determining that the number of femtocell base stations in the reduced set is greater than one, taking the reduced set as the first set in repeating steps (c), (d) (e) and (f).

A method and network node for controlling operation of first and second wireless communication networks both operating in a predetermined frequency band. The first communication network is operable to communicate within a plurality of first network channels within the predetermined frequency band. The second communication network is operable to communicate within at least one second network channel within the predetermined frequency band. Each of the second network channels co-exist in a frequency range occupied by a plurality of the first network channels. The method comprises the steps of: determining that there may be data to be communicated within a network channel of one of the first and second wireless communication networks, transmitting a channel restriction message to another of the first and second wireless communications networks, the channel restriction message instructing prevention of communication within the another of the first and second wireless communications networks on at least one network channel in the another of the first and second wireless communications networks coexisting in a frequency range occupied by the network channel; and instructing communication within the one of said first and second wireless communication networks on said channel. Receiving an indication of quality of service of data traffic in said first and second wireless communication networks and scheduling transmission of said channel restriction message to minimize disruption to said data traffic in said first and second wireless communication networks.
