A method of operating a radar to track echo signals from a target in the presence of a barrage jammer is shown to comprise the steps of actively determining the apparent direction of the combination of echo signals from a target and jamming signals, passively determining the actual direction and average power of a barrage jammer, calculating, from the foregoing, the actual direction of the target and instituting range and angle tracking of the target when the target is clear of the jamming signals.

Method of operating monopulse radar

An AWTSS is shown to be made up of an improved synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for generating radar maps with various degrees of resolution required for navigation of an aircraft and detection of ground targets in the presence of electronic countermeasures and clutter. The SAR consists, in effect, of four frequency-agile radars sharing quadrants of a single array antenna mounted within a radome on a 'four axis' gimbal with a sidelobe cancelling subarray mounted at the phase center of each quadrant. Motion sensors are also mounted on the single array antenna to provide signals for compensating for vibration and stored compensating signals are used to compensate for radome-induced errors. In addition, a signal processor is shown which is selectively operable to generate radar maps of any one of a number of desired degrees of resolution, such processor being adapted to operate in the presence of clutter or jamming signals.

All weather tactical strike system (AWTSS) and method of operation

A method of aligning two images of the same scene by matching features in a first image to features in a second image is disclosed. The method comprises identifying edges of objects in the first image using two different processes. The edges identified using both processes are compared and combined into one image representing confirmed edges which are readily identified in other images of the same scene. A template is then formed from the confirmed edges which is matched to a subregion of the second image.

Confirmed boundary pattern matching

A method of processing signals received by a four quadrant monopulse antenna to resolve the signals from two sources within the sum beam of such antenna is shown to comprise the steps of: (a) separately quadrature detecting each one of the signals (A, B, C and D) received at each one of the four quadrants to form corresponding complex signals having real (I) and imaginary (Q) terms, each one of such complex video signals being representative of a different one of the signals A, B, C and D; (b) forming the monopulse sum (A+B+C+D) signal, and monopulse difference signals [(A+B)-(C+D)], [(A+C)-(B+D)] and [(A+D)-(B+C)] and the corresponding monopulse ratios; and (c), calculating the monopulse ratios of the two signals that, when extant simultaneously, produce the corresponding monopulse ratios.

Method of resolving closely spaced targets

A method of reducing angle noise in return signals to a monopulse radar having a radome is shown to consist of the steps of: (a) transmitting a pair of signals at frequencies equally spaced above and below the tuning frequency of the radome; (b) digitally processing the return signals to form the complex monopulse ratios of the return signals corresponding to each one of the transmitted signals; (c) determining, by comparing the magnitudes of each monopulse sum and monopulse difference signals with the level of respective predetermined sum and difference reference signals, whether or not angle noise is exhibited and whether or not the signs of the imaginary parts of the monopulse difference signals differ; (d) comparing, to a threshold level, the amplitudes of the monopulse difference signals of those return signals which exhibit angle noise to select return signals exceeding such threshold level and whose signs differ; and, (e) averaging the real parts of the complex monopulse ratios of the return signals which exceed the threshold level finally to produce tracking signals in the presence of angle noise.
