A method that communicates a request from a first device to a proximally located second device for a movie residing in storage associated with the second device, the request communicated over a communications network, responsive to the request, receives the movie from the second device over the communications network, presents a menu on a screen corresponding to the first device, the menu comprising playback options to enable a user to manipulate playback and rewind of the movie, and responsive to user selection of one of the playback options, presents the movie on the screen.

Systems and methods are disclosed of a network including a primary device, a plurality of remote devices, and a shared peripheral device. The network allows the remote devices to operate the peripheral device, such as a DVD player, VCR, or camcoder, via the primary device and the network. The network also includes a splitter/isolation module (SIM) that routes the signals between the primary device and the plurality of remote devices.

A system is presented having a graphical indicator in an interface screen of an electronic program guide. The graphical indicator is configured to focus a user's attention on a selectable program instance field. The indicator has a length that depends on the duration of the selectable program instance, thereby conveying the start and stop times of the selectable instance. At least one indicator attribute is controllable by the user. For example, the user may control the indicator height, weight, width or brightness.
